More than 100 Americans fighting with Islamic State, Hagel says

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Wednesday that more than 100 Americans are fighting with Islamic State militants, the first time the Pentagon chief has put a number on U.S. citizens aiding the terrorists.

Hagel cited the Americans aiding the jihadists to illustrate the threat that the Islamic State poses to the United States.

"We are aware of over 100 U.S. citizens who have U.S. passports who are fighting in the Middle East with ISIL forces," Hagel told CNN, using the U.S. government's preferred acronym for the Islamic State. "There may be more. We don't know."

to 'extreme threats'. It puts thoughts in people's heads that are not supposed to be there.

I remember people making similar logical suggestions regarding any threat from Iraq eg, which there never was btw. They were accused of all kinds of things, like 'Saddam lovers' etc.

A bigger threat to the National Security, assuming that includes the lives of Americans, is the number of people who have died from lack of HC every year since 9/11.

Over half a million lives lost due to Corporate Greed. Some of that has been fixed now, but where were the cries of outrage over that very real threat?

I do think it is wrong of them to offer up something as serious as this and then not back it up. If American citizens can be targeted without due process then more needs to be known. No, I don't think Americans should be targeted without due process. Seems my opinion carries little weight. If they are going to do this they need to be more informative. This has the feel of propaganda it is so limited in information.

Should be an easy job with ISIS given the relatively small territory they are fighting in.

If we know who they are then how will they get back into the USA? Is the CIA/FBI/Military/NSA not able to do the job with the billions we give them from our tax dollars? The TSA's job is to take care of them if the drones don't get them first.... After all we Americans are "giving up our freedoms" when we fly and incredibly "inconvenienced." The Elderly in Wheel Chairs, Disabled, Children & Infants patted up and down and all still being X-Rayed/Scanned if they set off an alarm..

Ridiculous....

With the money we spend on "security", and what Hagel seems to know, we should be able to bring at least some of them back to the US and charge them. Unfortunately, the government has made its position on due process clear. I wish I had more faith in the government but I don't. They are the reason I don't. I am cynical to the point that I see this as some form of propaganda. What they are propagandizing I am not sure. Maybe attempting to limit blow-back as a handful of American Citizens are about to be killed by their own government without due process? That is kind of my guess.

Video: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/syria-arming-the-rebels/

NARRATOR: But in recent weeks, they have been receiving more sophisticated weapons. It appears the Obama administration is now allowing select groups of rebels like them to receive U.S.-made anti-tank missiles, known as TOWs. Many of the fighters have filmed themselves firing the missiles. In addition to receiving weapons, the commander says he and his men were taken on a long journey to a secret training camp.

REBEL COMMANDER: [through interpreter] They asked for a group of 80 or 90 fighters from our command, and we headed towards the Turkish border.

NARRATOR: Based on their accounts, we retraced their journey across the border into Turkey. After a 14-hour drive, they say they arrived in the Turkish capital of Ankara and were brought to a hotel. They were kept inside and questioned by Americans, who would only say they were from the military. But the rebels believed they were from the CIA.

REBEL COMMANDER: [through interpreter] We met them for six to seven hours a day. It was medical examinations, questions for each person individually, like, “When did you join the uprising?” And “What was your profession or military rank?”

They had tracked our work and asked us to verify information about attacks we carried out, such as who was present and how many men were martyred. Your responses have to match the entire group’s.

NARRATOR: A week later, the rebels say they were surprised by what happened next.

REBEL COMMANDER: [through interpreter] We only found out where we were going to be trained on the last day in Ankara, when the Americans said goodbye and that, “Tomorrow, we’ll see you in Qatar.”

NARRATOR: They were flown 1,500 miles away to Doha, the capital of Qatar, which is a key U.S. ally in the Persian Gulf.

REBEL COMMANDER: [through interpreter] We drove for about two, two-and-a-half hours to reach the training ground. It was close to the Saudi border. We didn’t know where we were because it was desert all around.

NARRATOR: Over the course of three weeks, they say they were trained by Americans at a base in the desert guarded by Qatari soldiers. Like many of the rebels who were sent to Qatar, 21-year-old Hussein had never had any previous military training.

HUSSEIN: [through interpreter] They trained us to ambush regime or enemy vehicles and cut off the road. They also trained us on how to attack a vehicle, raid it, retrieve information or weapons and munitions, and how to finish off soldiers still alive after an ambush.

NARRATOR: The rebels were outfitted with brand-new uniforms and boots.

MUHAMMAD ALI: [subtitles] Those trousers are from them, right?

HUSSEIN: [subtitles] Yeah. We got these boots in training.

MUHAMMAD ALI: The Americans were warning the fighters not to tell this story at all. And even at one point, they told them, “If in any case this story will be published, we will stop funding you or arming you.”

NARRATOR: The CIA and the State Department declined to comment on the fighters’ accounts of arming and training, though the Obama administration has said it plans to step up support to the rebels, and there have been other reports the CIA is running covert training out of Jordan.

We won't know until more damage is done with nato strikes and Cold War II with Russia ....how much involvement CIA had with Russia. Cy Hersh broke a story about CIA running weapons from Libya (after Nato liberated it) through tunnels into Syria arming those who took out Ambassador Stevens. Pepe Escobar on Asia Times has mentioned it and a few others.

So much skullduggery. They didn't learn from Iraq....and it seems neverending. We do know that wherever John McCain goes....there is always a disaster left behind. I heard he was in India last week.... So...we better be prepared.
