Israeli Military: Soldier Killed By Suicide Bomber {{{really?}}}

Jerusalem (CNN) -- An Israeli soldier was not captured and killed as initially believed, but died in an attack by a suicide bomber, the military said Sunday.

Israel had initially accused Hamas militants of capturing Lt. Hadar Goldin on Friday as a temporary cease-fire to the conflict in Gaza rapidly unraveled.

Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, an Israeli military spokesman, said later Sunday that Goldin was not captured and killed, but died in a suicide bombing. It was unclear who carried out the suicide bombing.

Some of Goldin's remains were found in and around the Gaza tunnel where the attack took place, Lerner said. He did not provide any more details on the purported suicide bombing.

If the Israelis were knowingly lying about the fate of Goldin, why would they now acknowledge that he died during the attack? The Israelis stated at the outset that there had been a suicide bomber in the tunnel. Hamas has never denied it. Rather, after first claiming that they had captured Goldin, they changed their story to say he must have been killed in a airstrike, which is ludicrous, unless you think the Israelis, encountering an unexpected fight in the tunnel were able in a matter of seconds, to call in a precision airstrike on their own soldiers' position.

But I'm sure you think that's entirely plausible.

his death was imminent he tricked the terrorist. Maybe created some doubt in the mind of the terrorist about how much more dead the soldier could be if he was blown up by a suicide bomber instead of merely being shot with the rifle?

Faux could play that scenario from many angles.

The military wing of the Islamist group said it had lost contact with some fighters in the area where Israel said the soldier had been seized.

It said it believed the fighters and possibly Lt Goldin had been killed in an Israeli airstrike.

Israel's defence minister and the chief military rabbi met the soldier's family at their home in the town of Kfar Saba on Saturday night.

And it's not as if they don't have a very very very long history of using suicide bombers.

You probably believe the airstrike story: that the Israelis, encountering an unexpected resistance in a tunnel within seconds called in a precision airstrike on their own position.

Suicide bomber tale is pure fabrication, and not even a believeable lie. IDF did a massive air and artillery strike on the soldier's captors, killing him in the process. Israel censored NY Times story.

The other soldiers reported that this was “heavy fire.” A few minutes later, additional forces arrived and discovered that Sarel and Gidoni had been killed, and that next to their bodies was the body of a militant who had presumably detonated an explosive belt.

And to the AFP:

But early on Sunday, the army announced that Goldin had been killed in action, with army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner telling AFP he had been identified by his DNA.

“What we know for sure was that one suicide bomber and at least three or four other gunmen came out of a tunnel.

“One blew himself up, killing two on the spot, and the others were shooting — they grabbed Hadar and snatched him down into the tunnel,” he says.

“We don’t know if he was alive and wounded, or dead at this time. Only in the aftermath, with the forensic investigation, were we able to conclude that he was killed,” he says.

The Israeli military spokesman said the remains were found in and around a tunnel? I don't know what the terms of the cease-fire were, but it strikes me as odd that whatever happened, happened during the cease-fire at the threshold of a tunnel. Were they coming out? Were they going in? Were they just loitering at the entrance (that seems to be a poor idea)? There's a lot of missing detail here.

was the statement I heard reported by Israeli officials on NPR early this morning.

Considering the source of the report you post CNN sort of puts CNN front and center pro-Bibi/Pro Likud - so no surprise how they spin it.
