General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI heard yesterday from a staunch Republican that
President Obama was going to cancel the 2016 election and remain in office. I tried to explain that such a thing was impossible to do, but to no effect. Does anyone know who's spreading this nonsense this time? I've heard it before, every time a Democrat is President, but don't know who is saying so now.

(948 posts)Sorry... too transparent. See right thru this.
You've been on this board for how many years and you need to ask where the right wing propaganda comes from? Really?

(32,852 posts)That is where republicans get everything.
Republicans are a complete failure. They have no ideas, no solutions, nothing good for America. Their only mission is to destroy the country and profit handsomely.
That's where all their "ideas" come from: you can tell by the smell.

(16,254 posts)It will get worse the closer the election gets, so hold onto your hat. Even worse for 2016.
It just makes me sick to see this country go so far downhill regarding elections. They have been ruined by the SCOTUS' decision regarding campaign donations (and, most everything else, of late), and the poison of the Koch bros. is so ingrained in their giant spider web of organizations/think tanks, the Tea Party and anything else they touch that it will take decades to clean up the horrible mess they've caused. I won't live long enough to see it happen, but I hope there are enough sensible/sane people, they'll make it happen.
I was looking at some photos of the militia along the Texas border. My God, they looked like they were out of the Middle East.

(33,575 posts)you just get all the RW echo chamber sites repeating it. Hard to find the source.

(16,296 posts)But keep in mind these are the same people who said:
1.Obama's going to take your guns away
2. He wasn't born in the USA
3. He's Gay, his wife is a tranny
4. etc, etc., etc.

(146,288 posts)appear to be the primary spreaders of this. Makes sense, I guess. I know this comes up around every election, but this was the first time I heard it for 2016, and was trying to find out where the person had heard it.

(115,683 posts)It could have come from anywhere, but probably from the fevered brain of one of the fringier hate-radio loons. I think you should make a bet with him - tell him you'll pay him $100 (or some other amount) on November 9, 2016 if there was no presidential election on the 8th. See if he bites.
MineralMan
(146,288 posts)So, I'll pass on that. Instead, I'll remind him of his prediction after the election.
Reter
(2,188 posts)Because if elections are canceled, martial law and civil war would happen, so the right-wing nut wouldn't worry about collecting his $100, he'd have bigger things to be concerned about.

(146,288 posts)It could go back even further. I guess I'm looking for something with a broader distribution than either of those. I doubt this person heard it from either Erik Rush or Tony Perkins. Has Fox News had someone on recently who said it?

(12,504 posts)I googled "Glenn Beck 2016 elections"
so I think we are back to a nebulous unknown source that all too many idiots are repeating in the hopes that panic sets in and a 2nd Amendment remedy is encouraged....I honestly think this is the end game for such statements.
These types of statements are not without the historical, histrionic mass responses. Remember when it was touted Obama was going to take everyone's guns? remember how the sale of firearems and bullets went through the roof? Fear mongering gives the story teller a sense of power. In their impotent rage, it's all they have.
MineralMan
(146,288 posts)The person who said it isn't one for obscure sources, so I'm trying to get an idea of where he might have heard it. Could be from some individual who does listen to wacko sources. I don't know.

Notice a number of posts at the link aren't exactly running away from the idea. Be kind to people who think like this. There is a deeper problem at hand.

(2,188 posts)It's not only every time a Democrat is in office, it was very popular here in 2008. It'll probably always resurface every time a President has been reelected and is approaching his final two years.
