What action should this hospital take?

A psychiatric outpatient opened fire Thursday inside a psychiatrist's office at a hospital near Philadelphia, killing his caseworker and slightly wounding the doctor, who shot the gunman with his personal firearm, authorities said.

A sign tells visitors to the wellness center to check weapons at the front, a medical technician toldThe Philadelphia Inquirer.
Hospital policy allows only on-duty law enforcement officers to carry weapons on campus, a Mercy Health System spokeswoman told the Associated Press.

To be clear- consider this event in isolation. The doctor stopped a shooting but was in violation of policy.

I am not claiming this incident proves nor disproves any pro/anti firearm policy.

If it says that bringing in a firearm will get you fired, then fire him. If it says it will get you reprimanded, then reprimand him. If it simply says not to do it and doesn't specify a punishment, then do nothing.

There's no need to debate this. If there is a policy in place, it should be enforced as written.

they had an obligation to protect their employees and patients, but they clearly failed to install adequate measures to minimize the risks. However, the doctor was bound by the Hippocratic Oath, and if he so feared for his safety to the extent of arming himself at work, he should have quit.

Punishing the doctor in any way would be absolutely ridiculous, not to mention tragic.

And I say that as a strong proponent of gun control.

That's the reason why there's a policy against having weapons in a hospital.

Commend him for what he did and then tell him that if he ever brings a firearm on campus again he will be terminated immediately.

and he also undoubtedly saved lives, even after being wounded himself. Leave him alone.

Clearly the doctor has violated the rules. It's the hospital's duty to either enforce the rules that they have or renounce and reconsider their rules.
