many of his friends had sent him pm's of support and that he ought to stand tall and not give in.

I don't know him very well, but i could see it was not going well. If he were my friend i would have sent him PM's stating he should stand down. No point in fighting to keep a post that will breed that much hostility.
I wonder if his friends feel awful for giving him terrible advice. And i think it was awful to pull VC into it. I have posted with her in IP and she's informative there. Trying to take her down with him upsets me. We sometimes do things for friends that we later regret.

Anyone who gave him that terrible advice should be ashamed at their own immaturity. Most people here are older than i and i expect to learn better behaviors for myself from them.
