Lottery and a little piece of trivia

Why it matters where you buy your ticket.

In the off chance that you should hit it big, the store where you bought the ticket, at least in California, gets a percentage of the wining. I am not sure what the percentage is.

Also, at least in California, they publish the store in the lottery website, apart of the local newsies running the story. This is why I will not buy a ticket, when I do, at my local 7-11 or Ralphs, but the very locally owned, and locally run, corner store. Yes the 7-11 is a franchise, but I suspect the local business, that's been there for like before I got here, will use the proceeds for the family and locally. Yup, family business.

So next time you decide to buy a buck, think about that one. No, they don't get to share on the buck or two, but I think five or six, they do.

It also draws customers in, due to the mistaken believe that if you hit it after buying a ticket there, well perhaps there is a streak. Never try to argue probability to people dreaming big.

In CA, the reward for selling the winning ticket is 1/2 of a percent, or 3.2 million.

In Ohio, where I live, they get 1,000 for every million, or 640k. Either way, the store that sells the ticket will cash in as well.

New york only pays 10 grand for selling a winning ticket.

The "biggest" store in the neighborhood, one of those mid-sized somewhat ethnic grocery stores that have their own butcher, sort of a mini-bank/"post" office that handles small packages, notary services, utilities payment, check cashing, and money orders - and they have several food carts that "rent" selling area - neighbors who get together and sell tamales, tacos/fajitas, and barbecue/grill mini-vendors along the sidewalk. They know pretty much everyone in the neighborhood, and I've seen them a tab for down on their luck regulars on occasion.
Great little store with halfway decent local produce and meats. This is the type of store that deserves support.

Packed at lunch, the manager told me that most of the time the big payouts cut into his business, people spend money on tickets, not beer/sandwiches. Today he said he was doing extra business across the board so that was good.
