To all southern Californians under red flag

Not just San Diegans. Be alert, this is expected to be a wickedly dangerous day. Not me saying it, fire officials saying that.

And yes, some initial attacks, fire speak for...we got a new fire, have already happened this morning. Thankfully the winds were not yet up there.

Windy day and night for days on end! It never used to be like this. Not only are fires a concern but so is Coccidioidomycosis aka cocci aka valley fever.

... one of these nasty fires almost took our next door neighbor's house.

As a fearless (and stupid) young man I was spraying water under the eaves of our neighbors house. (The roof was tile, fortunately. The house was built when wood shake was still legal. A house with a wood roof wouldn't have survived. It was also built before eaves had to be fire resistant.)

Once the fire had passed My face and hands looked and felt sunburned.

The fire killed all the trees on the edges of our orchard and destroyed the irrigation system.

I also saw a huge eucalyptus tree explode.

I'm not a "save our trees" kind of guy when they take eucalyptus trees down because of the fire danger.

Luckily we are 15 miles from an air attack base. For about 5 hours 8 planes including a DC10 attacked the fire which was almost to a residential neighbor hood.
It is out now thanks to the daring pilots in the attack planes
