(26,060 posts)Russia has whistleblower protections? You think putin would celebrate someone like Snowden that was stealing and then releasing government secrets? Or are we supposed to be impressed with the fact putin will celebrate anything that embarrasses the US? And let's not forget that when Greenwald could have spoken about gay treatment in Russia, he merely had this tweet:
"Russia has awful anti-gay laws; therefore, Snowden should return to US, which imprisons whistleblowers for decades" - drooling jingosists
ALL he cares about is trashing the US. Your greenwald worship is laughable.

Actually Snowden is old news. He pointed out that the NSA was violating the Constitution. But some think that if they disparage Snowden and Greenwald enough (day after day) then maybe we will forget that the curtain was pulled back exposing a NSA without controls. I guess for some denial is the only way to deal with life.

(55,981 posts)try at pushing a trade agreement down our throat without public input, without debate with Snowden's revelations about NSA transgressions. I dont have to like Snowden or Greenwald to recognize that the NSA has a huge problem. But apparently some here want to blindly trust both Obama's handling of the TPP and Gen Clapper's handling of the NSA.
Blind trust isnt an attribute of a politically liberal person. Choosing blind loyalty over principles, means one doesnt have principles.

(11,991 posts)"What it says in black and white" is something different when you don't take it out of its context.
To save you the trouble of clicking on a link, here's a portion of it:
------
Since that time, the government and intelligence services of the United States of America have attempted to make an example of me, a warning to all others who might speak out as I have. I have been made stateless and hounded for my act of political expression. The United States Government has placed me on no-fly lists. It demanded Hong Kong return me outside of the framework of its laws, in direct violation of the principle of non-refoulement the Law of Nations. It has threatened with sanctions countries who would stand up for my human rights and the UN asylum system. It has even taken the unprecedented step of ordering military allies to ground a Latin American presidents plane in search for a political refugee. These dangerous escalations represent a threat not just to the dignity of Latin America, but to the basic rights shared by every person, every nation, to live free from persecution, and to seek and enjoy asylum.
Yet even in the face of this historically disproportionate aggression, countries around the world have offered support and asylum. These nations, including Russia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua, and Ecuador have my gratitude and respect for being the first to stand against human rights violations carried out by the powerful rather than the powerless. By refusing to compromise their principles in the face of intimidation, they have earned the respect of the world. It is my intention to travel to each of these countries to extend my personal thanks to their people and leaders.
I announce today my formal acceptance of all offers of support or asylum I have been extended and all others that may be offered in the future.

(297,653 posts)she.. and no amount of fresh paint is going to cover his and greenwald's filthy profiteering lies. Remember ES thought he'd get a sweet gig in Iceland before that country said.. "NO.". So Russia was the only country who would take in poor hunted ES. According to him the USA wants to assassinated him.. and then another time he says the USA isn't afraid of him.. they're afraid of us. ES needs to get his stories straight.. but he shouldn't be taking lessons from Greenwald 'cause he can't keep his freaking shit straight, either.
Report Indicates Snowden/Greenwald Lied About Key Claims
"By now, we are all familiar with the big splash which resulted and continues to ripple from the fantastical claims made by Edward Snowden and his mouthpiece, Glenn Greenwald, about the ease with which the NSA's surveillance programs can be and are abused in order to eavesdrop on all of us, all the time, without a warrant, without authorization, and without consequence.
I, sitting at my desk, certainly had the authorities to wiretap anyone, from you or your accountant, to a federal judge or even the President, if I had a personal e-mail.
All they have to do is enter an e-mail address or an IP address, and it does two things, searches the database and lets them listen to the calls or read the e-mails of everything that the NSA has stored, or look at the browsing histories and Google search terms.
Its done with no need to go to court, no need to get approval . . . But it allows them to listen to whatever e-mails they want, telephone calls, browsing history, Microsoft Word documents.
Despite these astonishing claims, Snowden and Greenwald have yet to provide any evidence of any actual, current abuses or illegalities, much less any abuses that are as easy and common as they suggested."

Would You Feel Differently About Snowden, Greenwald, and Assange If You Knew What They Really Thought?
"And nearly as soon as Obama took office, Snowden developed a deep aversion to the new president. TheTrueHOOHA reacted furiously when Obama named Leon Panetta as his new director of central intelligence. But it was Panettas credentials he objected to, not his stance on surveillance matters. Obama just named a fucking politician to run the CIA, Snowden erupted. And he became furious about Obamas domestic policies on a variety of fronts. For example, he was offended by the possibility that the new president would revive a ban on assault weapons. See, thats why Im goddamned glad for the second amendment, Snowden wrote, in another chat. Me and all my lunatic, gun-toting NRA compatriots would be on the steps of Congress before the C-Span feed finished.
