(30,151 posts)I thought this was a hot topic...

(30,151 posts)6:20 on- he kind of nails it on the head right
Aerows
(39,961 posts)He comes off as arrogant, offended that people discuss prejudice.
Arcanetrance
(2,670 posts)clear cut or black and white. He's sick of people trying to boil it down to small quantifiable things. He made the point many times privilege should be discussed.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)it comes off as condescending. "How dare you interrupt my bubble that I love you people! How dare you question my commitment to equality for you people!"
Arcanetrance
(2,670 posts)I thought he was saying about the complexity of the issue was a good point. Yes I'm a white straight male but I also have an eye disease that'll cause me to be completely blind in a few years in fact I lost my job last night partially due to my diminishing vision. I have a body covered in scars some self inflicted from depression issues and other from accidents. So alot of time people don't like to look at me I don't go swimming which is something I love cause people make comments and stare. Would you say I'm a privileged individual because I am a white straight male or do the other things make it a wash. I'm really not trying to diminish anyone or their life experiences or offend you.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)physical, mental or emotional. None of it diminishes the experiences we have. Talking about our scars is a way to heal from them. Flaunting that you don't have any and lording it over those that do have scars isn't productive, which is what that video seemed to be doing.
Just my .02, and by no means will everyone agree with that perspective.

Do you have running water and a shitter?
Do both your legs work?

(37,573 posts)He rails against these preachy people, and yet sounds pretty darn preachy himself.
But I agree with his main message, which is sorta that we need more compassion and understanding and less judgementalism.

(37,573 posts)"the last thing you should want to do it to alienate a potential ally"
and yet he begins his rant by saying "the content of this video is going to get some people riled up."
I mean, he is kinda hoist by his own petard as he tells people, "stop preaching at other people and telling them to think and act differently, it just alienates them." as he admittedly tells other people to think and act differently and admits his "rant" will "get some people riled up".
Just admit that it is kinda tough getting somebody to change their point of view, and that it is better to talk respectful to them (which this video really does not) than it is to talk down to them (which this video does).

(21,506 posts)exactly!
I groaned when I saw this posted thinking great another video telling me to feel guilty.
I was pleasantly surprised to find it to be something I totally agree with. Which is not to say i dont think privilege exists but that is much more complicated than many of the preachy stuff that has been posted here would like to make it seem.
We have a long way to go to equality in America of that there is little doubt. We all need to work on it regardless of our particular classification on the privilege scale.

some people just want to see it in one dimensional terms

Sure, ok. I can understand that this language makes him very uncomfortable. But sweetness only goes so far.
2) The human condition is irreducibly complex
Err, no. Just no.
3) Don't be harsh
Hm, I dunno. Is this a matter of asking people to use language appropriate to the situation* or a case of poor boundaries and inappropriate taking up of fault and targetedness? I can't say without knowing what incident he is reacting to.
*Harsh and righteous language can be called for.

(55,160 posts)P.S. I'm all out of teaching and also along that line you can't teach the stupid or the bigoted. Ignorance on the other hand is teachable but in this day & age very few are ignorant. Take that for whats it's worth.

(599 posts)I don't think he succeeded, I'm not clear what he is trying to say.
but if people are assuming he is one of the "priviledged", that is not the case
this is RJ and he is not "white" he is from a Cuban background
he is also bisexual, engaged to marry his boyfriend

(25,406 posts)Nailed it. It's usually not helpful to pompously lecture people about how "privileged" they are.

(3,447 posts)It's not a difficult concept to grasp -- when you quantify people by labeling them into boxes, you are stereotyping them...which is one of the very things that the whole conversation was started to stop in the first place.
And anyone commenting about "why doesn't he watch his tone?!", do you realize you sound like "why don't you tolerate my intolerance?!"
