March 17th marked the 6 month anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movements beginning, and to celebrate, throngs of protesters took to the streets of New York City to march and celebrate the coming American Spring.
After a weekend of marches on Wall Street complete with spring training exercises, a St. Patricks Day march, floating tents, and dancing in the streets, Liberty Square (officially known as Zuccotti Park) was re-occupied by thousands of Occupy supporters. Early in the day, protesters embarked on a winding march around the area. They ended up back at the park, and police officers arrested about a dozen people, according to Truth-Out.
As night fell on Zuccotti Park, however, Occupy Wall Street protesters were reminded of the violent eviction that first drove them from the park in mid-November. Although police tried to deny media access to the park during the eviction, New York Times reporter Colin Moynihan observed the following:
By 11:30 p.m., as police officers massed on Broadway, a commander announced that the park was closed. Those inside shouted back that the park was obliged through an agreement with the city to remain open. The commander then announced that anyone who remained inside would be arrested and charged with trespassing.

(5,924 posts)Thanks to the occupiers who put their safety on the line.
And thanks (I guess) to the cops for raising the profile of the movement once again, while exposing the hypocrisy of those who vowed to "protect & serve" and "uphold the Constitution."

(34,845 posts)What do you expect the police to do when their job is to clear the park?
I'm not saying it's an excuse to use unnecessary violence but shit happens when protesters resist arrest. The police are surrounded and outnumbered by a crowd of hostile protesters. It's inevitable that tempers will flare.
Maybe if the protesters would do more protesting instead of trying to take over public parks, more good would come of it.

(1,674 posts)all over the country the cops have been violent against occupy , mainly because they are hired by the corporations to quell, or mayors who do not follow the constitution. The violent protesters have been the Black Watch group, probably hired by corps to start violence. Please get informed before defending these cops. NY cops moonlight working for Corps and wall st. This is fact. This is allowed by NYPD, even encouraged. Money talks in the most corrupt city.
