I have been told that if your state does not expand Medicaid then you are not eligible for subsidies.

And it's true, if you expect to make less than 100% FPL ($11,500) you don't qualify for subsidies.

I only made $10K last year, but with added work-study at my local community college, I expect that to be pushed up to $12K or so this year, just over the threshold.

Supposedly though, even if you end up making less than 100% FPL in 2014, you can still over-estimate your 2014 income as $12K, reap all the tax credits and cost-sharing, and not be penalized for it come tax time:

I'm sure that approach will be the worst kept secret in every red state that refused to expand Medicaid by the time the March deadline rolls around.

I just hope that the subsidies will be funded by someone, somewhere. This concerns me greatly.

From what I understand, most of the funding for the subsidies comes not just from the tax penalty for those who refuse to get insurance, but also from an estimated $1 trillion savings from Medicare, all those formerly uninsured people who will now be able to get free preventative care check-ups to catch serious ailments and diseases early and treat them before they become a real expensive burden to the Medicare rolls.

Indeed, as difficult as it is to believe, all this low-cost insurance goodness may actually end up saving us all money over the long-haul. (Although not as much as single-payer would.)

I'll never forget experiencing Crater Lake as a child. Hope to go back someday.

The coast has some great seafood as well!

They've been slow for me, saying I might qualify for medicaid. But I was still worried about deductibles and such. What I had before had a huge deductible - the price was the same for people who made too much for medicaid, which is still very little, and people who are millionaires. It was either/or before.
