Girl Who Dressed As Boston Bombing Victim, Threated With Rape And Death, Fired From Job, And Had Nud

Alicia Ann Lynch, Girl Who Dressed As Boston Bombing Victim, Threated With Rape And Death, Fired From Job, And Had Nude Photos Exposed Online

A young Michigan woman was fired from her job and has been receiving death and rape threats for her Halloween costume choice, which she believed was “a simple joke.”

Alicia Ann Lynch, 22, dressed as a Boston bombing victim for work on Oct. 31, with shorts, sneakers, a marathon T-shirt and with fake blood dripping down her face, legs and arms. According to Buzzfeed, Lynch posted a photo of herself in costume on her Twitter account @SomeSKANKinMI (which has since been deactivated) with the caption “Costume one #ssim #boss #halloween #boston #marathon #runner.” Almost immediately, the backlash against Lynch ensued, even including angry commenters publishing nude photos of her online.

who should be addressed are the people that felt the need to threaten her with rape and put out her pictures to humiliate her.

i do not think much of a prostitutes choices either. and you can damn well bet i am standing with her arm in arm if she is raped or abused.

these have nothing to do with the woman and ALL to do with the abuser.

Anytime a woman is thrown into any sort of public eye or dares to have a twitter or Facebook account, some mouth breathing basement dweller is going to sexually harass her, threaten her with rape, or bully her into either a mental breakdown or suicide.

There are legions of trolls out there who scour webcams and hack social media accounts to get the most embarrassing pictures of women possible and spread them across the Internet. The same assholes try to harass other women into taking nude pictures and then send those out.

It's slut shaming and attacking women who dare to take control of their own lives and venture out into the world. Those misogynistic bastards only want to see women degraded in the most public and embarrassing fashions imaginable. The assholes who dressed up like Trayvon Martin and Zimmerman didn't have nude pics spread around.

There are clearly reading comprehension issues here. He said the costume wasn't funny. In the story in the OP, he chose to express outrage over the costume rather than rape and death threats against a woman. I used his very words to point out the contrast between a costume and threats of rape and murder. I did not change the meaning of the word funny. My posts conveyed dismay (veiled disgust) that anyone could read that story and consider the costume the more egregious offense, but then I've read enough from that member to know his views of women.

Your decision that the most important point to make here was a defense of Quinnox's posts tells me what your values are. So as inane as this discussion has been, I at least learned something.

Think of it this way, how would people react to someone making fun of the jumpers from the World Trade center. A Super nova red-hot reaction, I bet. It is the same thing here. OF COURSE people will react in this way. Call it irrational, but people tend to go ape-shit when seeing this kind of thing.

But put yourself in the shoes of someone who was traumatized by this horrific terrorist incident, let's say even someone who lost a loved one at the Boston bombing. Now, imagine how they would react to that costume. For me, I can empathize with their outrage and what they would think about this. It would be a white-hot emotional reaction, that is for sure.

It really is a simple calculus, if she hadn't made this despicable costume, and then took pictures of it, smiling, like she thought it was funny, and then proudly posting them on the internet, then this whole storm would never have come her way. It really is that simple.

And if I were a victim of the attack, or knew someone who was, my reaction would probably be something like "You evil piece of shit! How could you?" But that is not in any way the same as a rape threat.

If you jump off a house to break your leg in an insurance scam, you're asking for it just as much as you jumped under the influence of drugs. A consciously self inflicted broken leg is just as irresponsible as imparing ones reasoning ability in a dangerous location.

It should be common knowledge by now that the internet isn't a private place and insulting thousands of people will draw a sizeable, and outsized, negative response. Especially if those responding will suffer no negative consequences.

It's reasonable to assume she drives to work. Do you think she drives like a maniac? Do you think she didn't have to learn how to operate a car in a safe manner?

Look at the image. She's in an office. She uses social media. The phenomenon of people saying stupid things on social media and suffering backlash for it is not uncommon, and any reasonable person would expect the same if they broadcast themselves in a costume making light of a tragedy suffered by an entire city.

Anybody that uses technology should assume the responsible use of that technology. "Oh, she's just precocious" might work when she's five, but she's old enough to vote and serve in the military. She's an adult, and she needs to learn to act like one.

Was the response she received over the top and unnecessary? Of course. But one has to ask how her personal information and image got on the internet to begin with. She made a lot of mistakes any prudent adult would have avoided, and like it or not, she's an adult.

Feel better now? It's not like I have ever said that the responses were in any way the right thing to do.

Okay. Let's try this. It ought to really give you something to misinterpret. It is entirely wrong to force women to wear a pup tent in Saudi Arabia. There isn't anything right about it. They shouldn't do it. Ever. Not at all. Not even a little bit. The men who do it are assholes. Every time. No exceptions. Ever.

Now, having established the obvious fact that making women wear a pup tent only an idiot would walk down the street in Riyadh wearing a bikini and not expect negative consequences. Those consequences would be a moral outrage, but the fact that they are wrong won't keep them from happening. Please note that this is an extreme example to make a point, and I am in no way advocating the compulsory wearing of pup tents by women anywhere in the galaxy.

Now, Ms. Lynch posted an image of herself on the internet, the most efficient distributor of information in the history of the human race, that annoyed a bunch of people. In response they said mean things to her. In a stroke of what has to be one of the most obvious cases of narcissistic stupidity since the last idiot did it, she also posted personal information as well. So not only did she annoy the hell out of a bunch of people, she gave them a way to find her and her family in real life. The technical term for that is Compound Fuck Up. Fortunately, even in light of such foolishness the chances that anything more will come of her mistake are fairly remote simply because most of the assholes that said mean things to her said them from their mother's basement and they're nothing but spineless no life trolls.

Tue Nov 5, 2013, 05:46 PM
Nov 2013

based on me, my friends, my family, my former classmates, etc. Not saying we didn't make mistakes, but I question Ms. Lynch's overall judgment:

--Extremely poor choice of Halloween costume.
--Carrying on in the workplace (unless a work-sanctioned party; even then, limit alcohol intake and avoid supply closets).
--Nude pics (not a "moral" issue for me, but one of trust and not knowing where they'll end up).
--Posting pic of driver's license to Twitter.

She shared with Buzzfeed that she raped:

“When people bring up the rape stuff, it kind of hits a spot, but I don’t show it. I’m over it, but it’s something that I would never, ever wish upon someone no matter what they had done. They can dress however they want.”

And I still don't think she gets it:

Lynch also added that she believes she was harassed so viciously in comparison to others who have worn Boston marathon bombing-inspired costumes this Halloween, because she is a woman. She claimed her intent was to be “funny.”

“Honestly, it’s the Day of the Dead,” she said. “I wasn’t a dead person, I wasn’t being disrespectful. I was a survivor of a marathon. And it’s not like I was walking around with a fake leg or my arm torn off or something like that.”

I do agree that the wholly inappropriate attacks were more vicious because of her gender. I would recommend that she step away from social media for a while... and learn the meaning of the word "discretion."

I imagine that if it was impossible to hide being anonymity, that there wouldn't have been any death or rape threats.

The cloak of anonymity brings out the worst in people. They knew nobody could find out who they were.

Makes me wish we could subpoena the internet providers to find out who the assholes were so they could get fired too.

especially the threats of violence, but also the job loss. A distasteful sense of humor is not a mortal sin. Oh, and the photos.

Threatening her.....with rape? And even death?

C'mon, man, that was just way over the top. Seriously.

Her for the costume and those idiots threatening her with harm. Actually those people are doubly stupid. First for threatening to cause her harm and secondly for doing it online where they can be tracked down.

This girl is pretty young still, and apparently not extremely smart, but her offense merits being taken to task, and told how offensive and inappropriate it was to dress up like a Boston bombing victim, instead of an Iraqi bombing victim - not losing her job, and threats of violence. It's like people just look for a reason to hate someone, anyone.

She had no though whatsoever about the victims of the bombing.

The threats of death and rape are three times beyond despicable. No one should have to put up with threats on their life over a damn costume..

215. A bad costume deserves to be met with exactly this: "That's a shit costume"

Maybe a "that's not really cool, real people were hurt"

.... fucking up someone's life over something like that is way way worse.

The costume was in poor taste, but that's no reason to threaten her and her family. Posting nude pictures of her is reprehensible. Losing a job over this is stupid.

I hope the pigs who did this to her are happy.

She's become the latest target of the Internet's contingent of misogynist assholes waiting for the latest woman to attack and slut-shame. These people couldn't give a crap about the Boston marathon bombing - they have a deep anger and hatred towards women.

Notice that when a man does something like this, nobody ever cares. That's because the reaction has nothing to do with the offensive thing that is done. Her biggest offense, to these people is being female.
