Think of each of these corporations as an army. Paying for soldiers, spys to do their work. Infiltrate, sabotage and occupy the base stations of the country. Destroy supplies, take the loot, blackmail, collude, whatever is necessary. Free Enterprise, Capitalism on the march.

positions tasked with regulating billion dollar industries. Ignoring the inflammatory "whore" statement, how could anyone be qualified to regulate these industries with no experience?

I don't think it's possible. I think the question to ask is "how do we get those experienced people into those positions without incentive to benefit themselves or cronies at the expense of the people?"
