California is a model of "sensible" gun legislation, generally.
Governor Brown did us proud in signing the good ones and vetoing the pointless ones-- the ones that might have led to successful recalls or challenges in court.

California Gov. Jerry Brown signed or vetoed a slew of gun-control bills Friday:
SB 127 by Sen. Ted Gaines, R-Rocklin -- Requires that reports by a licensed psychotherapist to a local law enforcement agency of someone who has communicated a serious threat of physical violence against a reasonably identifiable victim or victims be made within 24 hours; also requires local law enforcement agencies, when they receive such reports, to notify the Department of Justice electronically and within 24 hours. SIGNED
SB 299 by Sen. Mark DeSaulnier, D-Concord -- would require gun owners to report a gun theft or loss to police within seven days of knowing about it. VETOED
SB 363 by Sen. Roderick Wright, D-Los Angeles -- expands the crime of "criminal storage" to include keeping a loaded firearm within premises where a prohibited person is likely to gain access and actually accesses and causes injury. SIGNED
SB 374 by Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento -- would add all semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines to the state's list of banned assault weapons. VETOED

(154,021 posts)It's time to start to pay more attention to it. It's just not that friendly.
There are several bills on other matters that I need to follow

(68,644 posts)I had no idea that there were 18 bills on gun legislation on his desk!
I like to follow these and anything related to energy, transportation, and the environment.

(17,502 posts)He sees value in some stricter gun laws, but is independent thinking enough to not bother with what he does not work. His "being his own person" makes him a great liberal IMNSHO. A true liberal doesn't infringe on the individual unless there is substantial social need or gain and refrains when it does not. His veto statements show that. Besides, he is a gun owner himself.
not only is he intellectually honest:
If you noticed how Brown pauses before he speaks, he thinks before he speaks and does so in complete coherent sentences. That is a trait almost nonexistent in any politician. We need more like him.

(26,608 posts)much stink - or even much discussion - about it. But Gov. Brown apparently feels that it was pointless...

(68,644 posts)I've spoken directly with Jerry Brown on other matters and IMHO he doesn't give a rat's ass about any interest group, least of all gun owners.
He's been there and he's done that. He's like a BadAss Honey Badger.

(54,770 posts)one should report it. Personally, my bet is a lot of gun "enthusiasts" know they have illegal weapons and don't want to be held accountable if one is stolen. Or they are afraid they might pull a Zimmerman, get away and need to claim it was stolen. I like Brown, but he's not immune to gun culture's devious ways, money, and threats.

(15,333 posts)And it's just unpossible for him to have considered SB 299 and come to the conclusion
that it was pointless all on his own?
Oh spare us, even for you that's a reach...

(49,445 posts)...I bet a lot of gun owners in California aren't sure if what they have is legal or not anymore.
The bill making detachable-magazine semiauto rifles, as a class, "assault weapons" (and subsequently banned) would have at least simplified things.
