It depends on the source. It is not always the case that referring to him as Mr. is degrading.

Mr. Obama, or Mr. Bush is perfectly acceptable.
There are reporters on the tv machine that will use the NYT style sheet. AP will use President first, and then just Obama.

NYT IMO it should. But it is not enforced across the board. The editorial page is where you see it the least.
It used to annoy me, but it no longer does. To their credit they have been pulling these stunts since Clinton at least. Kudlow, iirc, started at the Times

In journalism, most news stylebooks require "President" be used on first reference and "Mr." afterward.
