US lawmakers expressed worries Sunday that a lack of American action on Syria could send a signal to Israel and Iran that Washington would not be steadfast in thwarting Tehrans nuclear ambitions.
Speaking to Channel 2 News, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz) said US President Barack Obamas decision to put off military action until after Congressional approval had rattled Israels belief in the US commitment to protecting the Jewish state from the specter of a nuclear-armed Iran.
It has discouraged our allies and I am most worried about the effect it will have on Israel and on Iran, McCain said. The Iranians are nearly euphoric, as is Bashar Assad, and our Israeli friends are very worried about the steadfastness and commitment of the United States concerning the acquisition of nuclear weapons by Iran.
McCain also dismissed threats by Syria that it would strike at Israel in revenge for a US attack.
Every time the US has acted decisively there is no retaliation against the retaliations, so I am not worried about the retaliations, he said.

(25,699 posts)All the people invoking Israel are, rather pointedly, not Israeli.
But that's often the way it goes. Angry white Christians think Israel is just the best most importantest place ever, and i imagine the people who live in Israel wish the angry white Christians would find somewhere else to be very interested in.

(21,786 posts)I don't really follow the logic here. Assad already has chemical weapons. Which the USA isn't going to prevent him from getting. Any American response isn't going to do anything to Assad's chemical weapons stockpile, or his production capacity; it would take ground troops to do that. A pointless "limited response" bombing campaign won't achieve anything because there's no clearly defined goal or strategy or endgame. It won't end the civil war in Syria, it probably won't dissuade Assad from brutally repressing the rebels, and it certainly won't effect regime change. Any similar response to a declaration from Tehran that they were on the verge of a uranium enrichment breakthrough...for instance...would probably only make the Iranians decide to redouble their efforts at acquiring nukes.

(37,364 posts)aligned in the ME is that the Israeli state is threatened. Sometimes Israel just needs to let others attend to their own concerns. I'd like to see us put a little space between Israel and US interests. The aren't always identical.

I am sick and tired of my tax dollars being used so that this blight on the ME can exist. It's a thug nation that kills Palestinian children and gins up conflict. Let it sink or swim on its own; and all those AIPAC-owned pols can take their sorry asses over there, too

(25,619 posts)Israel is the blight. Uh-huh. While these nations bomb and starve their peoples so that the uppercrust live literally like kings and queens, Israel is the blight. You have a real profound sense of what is right and wrong in this world. DU rules prevent me from saying what I really think of your 'post'.

(23,766 posts)if you want to talk about crimes against humanity ask the Palistinians who lost their homeland because of the collective quilt of the western powers after world war two. We spend way too much money on this country.
