The Plot Thickens on Edward Snowden's Sino-Russian Love Affair

You know how Edward Snowden - the hero of the anti-security libertarians - suddenly showed up in Hong Kong and then in Russia, and how the Russian government claimed that they had no idea he would show up at Moscow before eventually granting him asylum? Well, the plot just thickened a little. It turns out - and I am sure this will completely surprise every Snowden-Greenwald worshiper - that Snowden was in contact with the Russians well in advance of his not-so-surprising arrival in Moscow.

He lived in the Russian consulaate while in Hong Kong, and depending on who you believe, he either showed up on his own or was invited by the Russians, reports the Washington Post, quoting a Russian news source:

Before American fugitive Edward Snowden arrived in Moscow in June — an arrival that Russian officials have said caught them by surprise — he spent several days living at the Russian Consulate in Hong Kong, a Moscow newspaper reported Monday...

So that makes you wonder if he'd visited the Russian consulate before his latest trip...you know, to get a list of stuff to steal or something....?

It's a fair supposition, given that he never admitted doing "business" with the Russians in Hong Kong at all. He acted like it was a big surprise that he was "stuck in the airport" yet no one ever saw him there.

Frankly, it looks SUSPICIOUS, like it, or not. It also makes me wonder if a lot of these "little guy" countries "stepped up," knowing that they'd never have to make good on their offer, because Cuba had no intention of playing ball. Cuba clearly clued in their gas station, Venezuela, because they shut up about that offer pretty quick.

And Ecuador....? Gotta wonder if they played both ends against the middle!

Steal documents, flee to Hong Kong, and wait for the escort to Russia, where he's granted asylum. Russia then says no more secrets because they don't want the U.S. to know what they got. Seems like a far more plausible scenario than anything Greenwald has 'exposed', who now has nothing left but floor plans to release. Looks like the Russians used Greenwald, an overzealous, overreactive crusader, as a distraction. LoL. It does make a lot of sense now.

Or is it that Snowden should be condemned for talking to commies in red russia? Dude 1956 misses you so much.

Or is it that you don't really have any defense for what the NSA is doing and think it would be helpful to your pathetic world view to avoid discussing the issues and try attacking the man who messed up his whole life to make yours better?

52. Or Putin organized the whole thing in order to get valuable information from Snowden

and to give the U.S. a black eye in the process.

It's a win-win for Putin. Snowden might be the most valuable defector ever.

Talk about being clueless. . . .

Bad old commies. Sure putin was behind the whole thing. Yeah. That's a great new meme. It lets you avoid the issues that the whole affair means. You can just ignore America as it drifts off to the corporate lock boxes.

Hand full of straws.

57. Snowden decided to take the focus off internal US surveillance by bragging
Wed Aug 28, 2013, 12:04 AM
Aug 2013

about having access to names of US assets around the world and by threatening, through Greenwald, to release documents that would be of great harm to the U.S.

I think the subject of internal surveillance should be debated but Snowden crossed the line when he started leaking and threatening to leak about the NSA's foreign spying.

Your guy was gonna lie about it form now on. Did you think clapper was going to bring it up? Did you think the congress critters that were in on it, were going to give up their special secret spy badges by actually telling people what was happening?

You can't talk out of both sides of your mouth. Well. I guess you can actually, as evidenced by your post here. But it isn't intellectually honest and it's not getting by anyone but the defend-at-all-costs gang.

And to address the false head on you post. Snowden did not take the focus off internal US surveillance. He put the focus on it. You and the deniers are trying to take the focus off. I mean look at the OP. Commie skulduggery as an excuse to avoid discussing the what Snowden revealed with his brave sacrifice. He gave up his future so that you might have one. Ingrate.

93. You're misunderstanding me. I'm not blaming him for releasing
Wed Aug 28, 2013, 10:37 PM

the the power point presentation and related documents, and triggering the debate about US internal surveillance.

I'm criticizing him for also stealing documents about the NSA spying on foreign countries -- the job they're supposed to be doing -- and sharing some and threatening to release others.

Maybe he's a hero. And maybe he's just another defector to Russia, who brought to them a treasure trove of documents about our spying around the world while everyone was distracted with his claims about US internal surveillance.

And now Russia is claiming to be this big champion of civil liberties, with Snowden publicly thanking them. What a crock.

Stop worrying about Russia and whether they think their goofy leader is goofy or not. I know some Russians. They know. But they live in a state like the one this administration is trying turn us into. It's not about Snowden. So don't fall for the red herrings and bullshit distractions that the NSA and government are generating (like the OP). Stop worrying about Russia. Why do you care about that shit?

Don't fall for the us vs. them or who is the better celebrity. It's us vs. us.

The poster that was replying to me. That has something to do with me.

So where did I say that Putin was a god. It seems to me that the ones investing him with god-like powers are those who are pushing the NSA meme that Putin was behind all this all the time. You know. "Don't look at what we're doing to you. Look over there at that other guy. Move along - nothing to do with us."

And boom. The internets is full of gullibles that look where they were pointed.

It's not about Putin. It's not about Snowden. It's about our country being taken from us.

You are so gracious.

Please look up the word "meme".

You either don't know what it means or you are trying to use it to defect the fact that you are guilty of spreading one the NSA has created.

Your games don't work either. I didn't say that you couldn't be obsessed with a half-naked russian and still care about the destruction of the basis for your country. Go ahead. My problem is that so many - in their blind faith mode - want to equate the two.

Where did you get the idea for your post? Did it have anything to do with mine? Did you read what you wrote first?

Can you get any further from the concept of NSA malfeasance and intrusion? What lengths will you go to to defend the defenseless actions of this administration?

96. The subject, which you started, was whether Putin could

be behind the Snowden leaks.

You seem to think that would not be possible.

Now you've changed the subject back to the bad old USA that spies on everyone.

Putin could make the US look innocent as a new born babe.

Face it, Snowjob did not reveal any wrongdoing. He may have been a Russian asset all along.

You are completely wrong.

I didn't start the subject. Look upthread at the post to which I was referring.

My post was sarcastic. Sorry I didn't highlight the sarcasm in red for those who don't get such things. I was making fun of posts like yours that resort to all kinds of distraction because they can't actually discuss the issue without saying really stupid things like "if you aren't doing anything wrong, you shouldn't mind". (Sound familiar?)

And you face it. You have a very skewed view of what constituted wrongdoing.

And you have been watching too many Bourne movies. Step away from the netflix and stop falling for the government memes that are meant to distract from the fact that our government is trying as hard as possible to become exactly like the "commie" government your fear so much.

Not that any of the issues matters to you though. My reading is that Obama could shoot your grandmother, and you would find a way to defend that action.

Per Greenwald:

That story about the Russian consulate was fabricated; it never happened.

The bigger question is who is making up these stories (or providing false details) to cause misdirection?
