Greenwald VOWS Vengance: ENGLAND 'WILL BE SORRY'

Last edited Mon Aug 19, 2013, 05:43 PM - Edit history (1)

Glenn Greenwald To Publish UK Secrets After Britain Detains Partner

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 19 (Reuters) - The journalist who first published secrets leaked by fugitive former U.S. intelligence agency contractor Edward Snowden vowed on Monday to publish more documents and said Britain will be "sorry" for detaining his partner for nine hours. British authorities used anti-terrorism laws on Sunday to detain David Miranda, partner of U.S. journalist Glenn Greenwald, as he passed through London's Heathrow airport.

Miranda, 28, a Brazilian citizen, said he was questioned for nine hours before being released without charge, minus his laptop, cellphone and memory sticks, which were seized. Greenwald, a columnist for Britain's the Guardian newspaper who is based in Rio de Janeiro, said the detention was an attempt to intimidate him for publishing documents leaked by Snowden disclosing U.S. surveillance of global internet communications. Snowden, who has been granted asylum by Russia, gave Greenwald from 15,000 to 20,000 documents with details of the U.S. National Security Agency's surveillance programs. "I will be far more aggressive in my reporting from now. I am going to publish many more documents. I am going to publish things on England too. I have many documents on England's spy system. I think they will be sorry for what they did," Greenwald, speaking in Portuguese, told reporters at Rio's airport where he met Miranda upon his return to Brazil."They wanted to intimidate our journalism, to show that they have power and will not remain passive but will attack us more intensely if we continue publishing their secrets," he said.

Miranda told reporters that six British agents questioned him continuously about all aspects of his life during his detention in a room at Heathrow airport. He said he was freed and returned his passport only when he started shouting in the airport lounge. Brazil's government complained about Miranda's detention in a statement on Sunday that said the use of the British anti-terrorism law was unjustified. Many Brazilians are still upset with Britain's anti-terrorism policies because of the death of Brazilian electrician Jean Charles de Menezes, who was mistaken for a suspect in a bombing attempt in 2005. Menezes was shot seven times in the head by police on board an underground train at a London station.

Q: Will the UK's detention of your partner deter your future reporting?

A: Absolutely not. If anything, it will do the opposite. It will embolden me: I have many more documents to report on, including ones about the UK, where I'll now focus more. I will be more aggressive, not less, in reporting.

I wouldn't have to be set up for anything if it was my spouse. They are your spouse, you love them, and you will hold them above all others.

Oh, but you were implying that they were just really good friends engaged in espionage.

You are very off key.

No one "mules" their partner, best friend and spouse. That is what has been ludicrous from the start with this position. If you think anyone with a shred of care for their spouse would set them up for foreign detention, prosecution, and to be kept away from them, you are really a piece of work.

Like everyone makes their spouse available for arrest because they are handy.

This is a fucked up idea on many levels.

Aug 2013

I've referred to Greenwald as GG in many posts on the internet. I'm now guessing that because Gigi is a woman's name in French, and also a movie about a woman, that Greenwald is referred to by that in order to imply he isn't a real man. I had an Italian born foreman/job supervisor named Luigi that we called Gigi, I never connected that "GG" was anything but an abbreviation.

Cripes, I hate when language is twisted for nasty reasons. I'll stop using that abbreviation, so as to avoid confusion, if my guess is correct.

In addition, the use of the phrase "drama queen" is verboten for the same reason. I suggest "drama lord" as a substitution, but it may not be good enough.

I don't know what to suggest if you are trying to avoid typing in Glen Greenwald for the umpteenth time. I used GG just now because the entire name would not fit in my header.

I beg forgiveness for what I did not know and could not have been expected to know.

People were calling him GiGi. He's gay. That's a woman's name.

When called out on it, they changed it winkingly to GeeGee.

Poster I originally responded to used "GeeGee." When I pointed it out, she changed it to GG, which no one has a problem with.

post a link. Liberals need to ask themselves some serious questions about GG. You'll notice he never writes about the social justice issues liberals claim to care about, like poverty, disparities in wealth & education. He's a selfish ass libertarian, who thinks corporations should be able to do whatever the hell they want, and the government should leave them alone to do it. I was gobsmacked when I learned that he supported the Citizens United ruling, and that he favors a very wealthy individual being able to buy political office. Hypocrite doesn't even begin to describe this cretin.

@ggreenwald: @bungdan No-it was in Portuguese. I said they'll come to regret what it (arrependerr) when asked what the world impact would be of detention

Glenn Greenwald @ggreenwald
19th August 2013 from TwitLonger

Reuters is the absolute worst at tearing comments out of context for sensationalizing headlines. The paraphrase:

Q: Will the UK's detention of your partner deter your future reporting?

A: Absolutely not. If anything, it will do the opposite. It will embolden me: I have many more documents to report on, including ones about the UK, where I'll now focus more. I will be more aggressive, not less, in reporting.

Q: What effect do you think they'll be of the UK's detention of your partner?

A: When they do things like this, they show the world their real character. It'll backfire. I think they'll come to regret it.

REUTERS: HE VOWS TO PUBLISH DOCUMENTS ABOUT UK AFTER DETENTION, SAYS THEY WILL BE SORRY!!!

It's not about heroes. It's about truth and facts.

I wouldn't have to spend so much time countering bullshit about Greenwald if there wasn't so much bullshit about Greenwald.

I have spent plenty of time debunking bullshit about plenty of other people, including Barack Obama.

And, no, the argument (although technically I just posted what Greenwald stated) is not tantamount to arguing what the meaning of is is.

136. You're quibbling about the difference between "regret" and "revenge"? No matter how you slice-n-dice
Tue Aug 20, 2013, 05:07 PM
Aug 2013

it's a clear signal of vengeance. However, it may not work the way he hopes. In his spittle laced interview, he was clearly seething with rage, and promised that the UK government would regret this action, because it will only cause him to double down on his exposure. That's a threat, and a personal vendetta, no matter what the new meaning of "is" is. Because one is a "journalist" (his contention, not mine) does not give one license to break laws. I'm waiting for GG to take on Russia or Ecuador, now that would be brave.

Mon Aug 19, 2013, 02:21 PM

versus "revenge"?

Both are threats. You think that he believes the "regret" is on the order of being a nuisance versus enough to make them scramble? If that's the case, then why all the histrionics?

84. "The personal ... is political"
Mon Aug 19, 2013, 02:26 PM
Aug 2013

“The personal, as everyone’s so fucking fond of saying, is political. So if some idiot politician, some power player, tries to execute policies that harm you or those you care about, take it personally. Get angry. The Machinery of Justice will not serve you here – it is slow and cold, and it is theirs, hardware and soft-. Only the little people suffer at the hands of Justice; the creatures of power slide from under it with a wink and a grin. If you want justice, you will have to claw it from them. Make it personal. Do as much damage as you can. Get your message across. That way, you stand a better chance of being taken seriously next time. Of being considered dangerous. And make no mistake about this: being taken seriously, being considered dangerous marks the difference - the only difference in their eyes - between players and little people. Players they will make deals with. Little people they liquidate. And time and again they cream your liquidation, your displacement, your torture and brutal execution with the ultimate insult that it’s just business, it’s politics, it’s the way of the world, it’s a tough life and that it’s nothing personal. Well, fuck them. Make it personal.”
― Richard K. Morgan, Altered Carbon

http://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/2095852-altered-carbon

An interesting way of looking at things, it's a bit wordier than "Revenge is a dish best served cold" but it's more a call to arms than advice as an aside. I'm not suggesting this reflects GG's attitude/world view but I do think it worth weighing given the contempt the 1% and their employees have been showing the rest of us.

Lest we forget, GG has reason to think he is a target.
