(2,484 posts)From the pictures, I think this is the same clown that was at the Missoula State rodeo in Darby, MT last month. Somehow I ended up in the stands (mother lives up there and gave me a ticket). Before I left because using animals for entertainment is not my thing, I saw the clown's antics. It was mostly hokey low-brow entertainment (performing different dances to 90s songs, throwing footballs into the stands) etc.
Although it was not my type of crowd or show, I never once got a sense of racial hate. Now, that is not to say that there weren't racists cheering this guy because they hate Obama based on skin only at this recent rodeo, but as far as the clown himself, I just didn't get that previously.
The easiest way to tell is if there is a pattern. Racists suck at hiding it, they are almost proud of it. There would be grainy video of other borderline or worse than borderline activities involving this guy. And before you think that nobody would report it, you would be surprised with who has moved to retire in mid-west. There are plenty of Democrats around.
Either way, I agree with the ban. Actions have consequences, and some learn that the hard way.

(2,484 posts)I have been digging to see if this rodeo clown was the same as I witnessed, because the pictures look similar, and this guy supposedly does multiple rodeos annually.
I did not witness any racial issues at the event I was at, which now is not relevant since it has been made more than obvious by new information I have seen that this was racial.

(10,820 posts)Simply wearing a mask of Obama is not racist.
It was extremely poor judgement and disrespectful to the office to wear the mask and pretend a bull was going to run down the President.
It WAS racist when the other clown played with the lips on the mask.
It was simply unacceptable that the incident occurred at a taxpayer funded, state sponsored event like the MO State Fair. This part of the story is why the clown and maybe the Rodeo Assoc. needed to be sanctioned.
The last layer is BY FAR the most racist element to this story - the online reactions on many of the comment threads at newspaper web sites and other web sites. The explosion of unvarnished racism in response to the story was quite a thing to behold. The use of the N-word and pictures of monkeys to depict the first family got so bad that the KC Star had to DISABLE their comments sections on stories related to the clown incident. Politico as well has had hundreds of "in your face" racist comments on their comment threads.

The OP's point (who is me) is that often race gets tossed in like napalm where it didn't exist and therefore creating yet another wound in our society. A needless one that does noting to help the situation. Either the tasteless one or the racism one

(25,699 posts)No, the whole thing revolves around the President being someone who is "out of place," and needs to be "taught a lesson" or even destroyed.
The genesis of all this is simply the belief that Obama is illegitimate because he's not a white man. That's why the "joke" was conceived, that's why the crowd went wild, that's why the rodeo association gave it a thumbs-up. On and on down the line, Obama is presented as a thug conducting a home invasion on the white house.
Boom Sound 416
(4,185 posts)Have thought to this with a bush or Clinton mask, but it's your point to illegitimatacy that I agree with you
That very likely may have been the motivation.

(849 posts)In 1994 they put a Bush mask on a dummy propped up by a broomstick and the bull tore the dummy up. Lampooning presidents at rodeos is not a new thing.

(1,289 posts)I don't know if the clown himself is a racist or not, I don't personally know the guy. Was the act racist? Yeah, I believe it was racist. Now, whoever put him up to it, there's the racist. I'm not buying that he just all of a sudden "went rogue", somebody put him up to it, and when it all started going south, headed for the hills. I'm not going to judge the clown too harshly, for now anyway. I've known a few rodeo clowns, they were rodeo cowboys who had too many bad falls off of bulls or broncs and couldn't ride anymore, so they took the only work the rodeo had to offer them, getting paid very little and living a hair's breadth above homelessness. They'd probably do just about anything they thought the crowd might find funny just to keep working, especially if the boss told them to.
I'd just love to know who that boss is, there's the real culprit.
