(20,176 posts)I'm one of those people. I'm very much normal and average of a DC resident:
- I've lived here less than 5 years.
- I was born more than 60 miles outside of DC.
- I am not intending to stay in DC for more than a decade.
- I identify as a native of another city/state. (NYC)
- I am registered to vote in, hold a state-ID from, pay federal income taxes, am census-registered and/or list a permanent address in a jurisdiction other than Washington DC.
85% of DC residents meet 3-or-more of the above conditions. Why are they entitled to an opinion?

(2,484 posts)It seems those who watch football are just anesthetized to it. I have to stop and actually catch myself not being offended when an announcer says "Redskins" like he is reading off the current temperature.

(3,660 posts)But if I am not mistaken didn't the Native American tribes around the country give their OK about the name of the football team, and stated that they were not offended by the nickname.

(20,176 posts)They not only overwhelmingly support the name of FSU's mascot, they receive payments from the university to thank them and as reparation for the damage to their culture over the centuries of non-Native-American settlement.
The Redskins name has been widely criticized and opposed by both local tribes and national Native-American-discrimination groups for decades...the previous owner Jack Kent Cooke was somewhat open to changing it if a reasonable solution could be agreed upon. (Which is somewhat impressive as JKC was a racist and an extreme conservative in the Koch mold) The current owner (Daniel Snyder) is on record as saying he will allow the team to cease to exist before he will bow to pressure to change the name; the NFL has taken the position that it is a team decision, but quietly they would like this resolved somehow as they have concerns that eventually this is going to come to litigation and they're going to be named as a co-defendant.

(3,660 posts)I have only loosely followed the situation, but it would certainly change my mindset if many Native Americans did find this name offensive.

(5,514 posts)My initial reaction would be to change it, but I've mostly heard from actual Americans that they aren't even offended..

(5,417 posts)Most indians don't find the name offensive, and a lot don't want it changed.
I'm white, so I'm not going to determine if its offensive or not, but if most Indians are fine with it, then let it be.

(20,176 posts)Maybe it's the traditionalist in me but there should be a major-professional sport team in DC named Senators.

(20,176 posts)if they were compelled to change the logo and any association with Native Americans without the express consent of a local tribe to use their name or cultural signifiers.

(24,853 posts)I would add; if I were hard pressed to come up with a name for a sports team from D.C., it would HAVE to be something alone the lines of
Prevaricators
Liars
Cons
Distorters
Evaders
Falsifiers
Fibbers
Misrepresenters
or
The Put Ons.
Spirochete
(5,264 posts)that would be a good name.

(1,289 posts)I say let them keep the name, just take the Indian off the helmet and put a red skinned potato on there instead

(19,964 posts)The Potomacs (The Potomac River is named for the Patawomec tribe of Virginia) http://www.patawomeckindians.org/HistoryMembership.html
This would have the benefit of actually honoring Native Americans who lived and still live along the Potomac. As a descendant of Chief Japasaw and his son, Wahanganoche, I think this would pretty cool, but I'm biased. Anything but "Redskins!"
The Continentals (nickname for colonial soldiers during the American Revolution). But this sounds like a 50's be-bop band.
Lincolnites (Confederate nickname for Union soldiers). I don't know -- it's not very catchy, is it.

(23,340 posts)since DC had such a high homicide rate, the word "bullet" has some issues in this city.
Redskins is a racist pejorative. Enough Native Americans are offended by the term to change the name
I suggest we re-name the team the Washington Snyders.
That will ensure the cooperation of a certain ego-maniacal and interfering team owner. It will not help them win games, however.
