Religious people are less intelligent than atheists, study finds

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Grateful for Hope (a host of the General Discussion forum).

Religious people are less intelligent than non-believers, according to a new review of 63 scientific studies stretching back over decades.

A team led by Miron Zuckerman of the University of Rochester found “a reliable negative relation between intelligence and religiosity” in 53 out of 63 studies. Even in extreme old age, intelligent people are less likely to believe, the researchers found - and the reasons why people with high IQs shun religion may not be as simple as previously thought. "

* As early as 1958, Michael Argyle concluded, “Although intelligent children grasp religious concepts earlier, they are also the first to doubt the truth of religion, and intelligent students are much less likely to accept orthodox beliefs, and rather less likely to have pro-religious attitudes.”

A 1916 study quoted in Zuckerman’s paper (Leuba) found that, “58% of randomly selected scientists in the United States expressed disbelief in, or doubt regarding the existence of God; this proportion rose to nearly 70% for the most eminent scientists.”

......some see what others do not. Maybe it exists for some, and not for others. IOW, how do you describe sight, or the sound of a viola to one who does not have the senses to perceive them?

the believe in the divine or to be spiritual. Dogma isn't the same as your spirituality. I believe in God and I have a master's degree. I find the older I get, the more I believe. Am I am church goer or whatever? No. I don't believe you have to go to believe

Studies like this piss me off. They stereotype people

Religious belief has a habit of going hand in hand with a lack of critical thinking. But there are many reasons for religious belief, especially being raised in a religious environment or fear of retaliation (either supernaturally, by family, or culturally) for apostasy.

This was back in the early 50's, in Kansas yet. If god loves us all, why can't you go to Heaven if you have never heard of Jesus.

Religion explains all simply, puts the mind at ease by removing uncertainty, and allows one to rest in faith putting aside critical thinking.

On the other hand, if you find that your mind seems rather well built for critical thinking, and that uncertainty is a tolerable and normal part of the real world, you wind up having little use for faith. A thirst for information and a regularly active mind should lead to greater intelligence (though the definition for that term has been disputed for ages).

OTOH, I've never known a stupid Atheist or Agnostic

I think I will say that the only really dumb religious people were fundamentalists. The smart religious people were able to co-mingle belief in God with Science
