State police at Lehighton sought a search warrant from a district judge to search Newell's property.
According to previous reports, Newell got a building permit from the township to have a storage structure on the property, but then built a dwelling without first getting a zoning permit or certificate of occupancy from the township.
Over the years, authorities have responded to Newell's property as a result of neighbor complaints and on one occasion in 2009 found human fecal matter in buckets there, according to previous reports in the Pocono Record.

(47,558 posts)...what it really means is "when I think about it", but that doesn't sound as good.

(22,109 posts)Which sounds more inclusive than "When I think about it", but is less common than saying, "When you think about it".

(22,109 posts)So are you saying it wasn't a political point you were making? I actually thought I got it when I read it, BTW.

This is another example of the political disconnect which seems to be cropping up in our country.

(46,736 posts)When you find a Democrat who is against government regulation, it should set your radar off.
The only time I can think there would be a problem with that is if the government regulation was proposed by Republicans who are making it easier on corporations or if the government entity is Republican controlled and is applying the rules in an arbitrary fashion.
Hard to believe that we have local governments who pick and chose who they are going to apply the rules to, and who they decide to bestow favoritism in order to buy loyalties, but it does happen. I live in one of them.

Set off any radar?
I'm going to highlight the 1st and last of their sentences, please explain how they contradict each other....

(37,161 posts)For the drinking age example, do you think it's illegitimate for the government to set a drinking age at all, or do you just disagree with the current regulation and think a change to 18 is in order?
That would be the big difference.
Another point would be how one went about protesting or defying a regulation they thought was improper or invalid. This guy simply ignored some fairly basic building regulations.
Baitball Blogger
(46,736 posts)I'm fine with petitions and referendums to change regulation. It's a process that requires convincing a large segment of the population, so it tends to be more democratic.
Because I live in a Republican community I know that there is no such thing as simply ignoring basic building regulations. Around here there is a hardcore philosophy of land taking in this community that they euphemistically refer to as "property rights." It goes far beyond what you think it means. It's like a mental illness that is easily spread and corrupts the fabric of civility between neighbors.
What is most upsetting is that it looks like lawyers have helped to feed the frenzy. Because this is mostly a Republican community, I associate that nuttery with Republicans. Most unfortunate because a lot of corruption goes on at the high level, while middle ground soldiers are disrupting the community with their pseudo legal interpretations of property rights.
Baitball Blogger
(46,736 posts)I mean, something that you will just plain ignore.
I live in a Republican community and I see examples of it every day. Many Republicans don't believe in following regulations. Period. They constantly denounce any city, state or federal law without making any effort to understand why the law was legislated to begin with. That includes the declarations of their own HOA. It makes for constant conflicts, especially when they take over the boards.
I don't see a problem wanting to change the laws you don't agree with, as you have mentioned in your case. That's what petitions and referendums are for. I can even see the usefulness of civil disobedience if the circumstance requires it. But just turning your back on all regulation...that tends to be a Republican trait.
hexola
(4,835 posts)So safe to be against them?
Baitball Blogger
(46,736 posts)It's our duty to expose how they have taken over our local governments and warped them beyond recognition. My interest is civil rights and after years of personal research I have found that the source of inequality in our society comes from Republican inspired government.

Is he being truthful or playing a part? The "I voted for Obama but..." line reminds me of when people say things like "I have black friends but..." And I'm not saying people are racist who disagree with the President at all, but that maybe they're not being truthful about their support in the first place.
