A mother and son will stand trial on reckless homicide charges for allegedly leaving the woman's sister to die for three days on the floor after falling in their home.
Dane County Circuit Judge Frank Remington ordered that Steven King, 45, and his mother, Veronica King, 71, be tried on charges of first-degree reckless homicide, causing death by recklessly subjecting an individual at risk to abuse and hiding a corpse, all for the death of Veronica King's sister, Mary Coleman.
Coleman died at the Kings' home on Whenona Drive on Madison's West Side on May 9, 2009, three days after she fell out of bed after suffering a possible stroke. A criminal complaint alleges that the Kings kept Coleman's body in the basement, then moved it to the garage, where it was found by police in August 2009.
Veronica King will also be tried for making withdrawals from a joint account she had with her sister, into which her sister's pension and Social Security benefits continued to be deposited after her death went unreported. Remington dismissed the same charge against Steven King, saying there was no evidence he participated in that portion of the scheme.
