Four years ago, Sampal the dolphin was accidentally hauled out of South Korean waters in a fishing net, but instead of throwing her back like they should have, the fishermen sold her to an aquarium. She learned to do tricks on command, but she never forgot her family. Fast-forward three years, when activists battling for Sampal's freedom won their case; the aquarium began the long process of rehabilitating her to release her back into the wild. An impatient Sampal had other plans, making a break for it in late June through a tear in the netting and disappearing into open waters. Amazingly, she was recently spotted, swimming with the exact pod of dolphins she was taken from. Happy and free. http://www.takepart.com/article/2013/07/11/sampal-dolphin-escapes-captivity-reunites-pod-ten-years-later

(11,012 posts)discovered that at Marineland of Florida.
Recently, a group put out a press release saying that they had evidence "confirming" the Caldwell's research but worded it in such a way that it looked like they had just made the discovery.
Dolphins get a "whistle" at birth which is then used to identify that dolphin for the rest of its life... "Whistle" equals "name."

(27,670 posts)They really are. For years, a pod would come to visit me almost every time I walked the beach by my house in the morning, no matter if it was 6 AM or 10 AM. They would parallel me as I walked, surfacing close to shore for a good distance before going about their other business. They are happy, beautiful spirits, I love dolphins.

(36,988 posts)I totally agree with you they need to be set free. India has done just that thing this year.
India has officially recognized dolphins as non-human persons, whose rights to life and liberty must be respected.
Dolphin parks that were being built across the country will instead be shut down.
India's Ministry of Environment and Forests has advised state governments to ban dolphinariums and other commercial entertainment that involves the capture and confinement of cetacean species such as orcas and bottlenose dolphins.
In a statement, the government said research had clearly established cetaceans are highly intelligent and sensitive, and that dolphins "should be seen as 'non-human persons' and as such should have their own specific rights."
The move comes after weeks of protest against a dolphin park in the state of Kerala and several other marine mammal entertainment facilities which were to be built this year. Animal welfare advocates welcomed the decision.
"This opens up a whole new discourse of ethics in the animal protection movement in India," said Puja Mitra from the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organizations (FIAPO). Mitra is a leading voice in the Indian movement to end dolphin captivity.

And India has declared dolphins "non-human persons", and so they have rights we must respect. WOW! I had no idea the Indian govt. is so advanced. I wish we were anywhere NEAR that evolved.

(1,009 posts)First, it was emancipation of slaves. Then women's suffrage. Now, leaving other sentient beings be.
I have no problem with humans killing animals for food. That's part of nature's cycle. I do have a problem of doing it inhumanely or for sport or exploitation of animals for financial gain because animals haven't figured how best to use cash or how to enter their PIN at the ATM.

(1,588 posts)Perhaps but the cruelty and suffering of farm animals is a real problem. Some areas are even attempting to make the reporting the abuse of farm animals a felony for the person doing the reporting. No animal should be made to or allowed to suffer.
