I really, really hate that climate, both ecological and political.

(1,989 posts)I had "previously" always wanted to go, because people always gave the impression of a sunny vacation spot to visit. We were considering a family vacation/reunion there for next year. We nixed that potential spot last night.
But, what is the climate like? I really hadn't heard anything about the weather or the ecology of the location.

(13,920 posts)I guessing you mean cold relative to the normal Florida temperatures, not actually cold. Ive only been there once, but I cannot in a million years imagine it ever getting cold enough in Florida that a northerner like me would need a coat.
You got the swamp part right. Lots of living critters and very few of them pleasant to share space with.

(111,332 posts)While northern and central Florida do get rare cold snaps, winter temperatures are more usually in the 70s and 80s with 90% humidity. If you drive around the area, you'll see a lot of senior citizens in lawn furniture in their garages or carports, they can't afford the AC.
And you wouldn't believe the bugs there. It's swampy, meaning it's heaven for breeding mosquitoes.
And it's quite tropical. Normal summer pattern is a torrential downpour for about an hour a day, unless it's a hurricane. They last longer. Unless you stay in a beachfront hotel or condo, forget about enjoying the beach. Jebbie's contractor buddies spoiled most of them by putting up an unbroken wall of high rises.
For a fun in the sun summer vacation, head to Myrtle Beach. For a fun in the sun winter vacation, try the Bahamas. Or the Yucatan. Or Hawaii. Or Rio.
ETA: If you're still not discouraged, I have two words for you: Flying. Cockroaches.

(6,837 posts)I think it may be time to (figuratively) do exactly as Bugs does. Maybe we can give the place back to Spain.
