... the white kid ends up dead from a gun shot after an altercation.
Would that black man have been free for 44 days before public outrage brought him to charges?
No... that hypothetical black Zimmerman would have been arrested that night, tried a week later, found guilty of first degree murder and already be on death row.
If the races of the two people in this incident were reversed. The older, heavier, armed wannabe cop would have been lynched already.
You all know it is true.
I am a 46-yr-old white guy. Don't tell me this wasn't about race.

(54,770 posts)In fact, when the police arrived at the scene of Trayvon's murder, they yelled at him -- as he lay there dead/motionless in the rain -- "show your hands, show your hands." The whole GD thing is disgusting.

There would have been no Stand Your Ground support for the black Zimmerman, none at all, there would have been no donations from the gun 'enthusiasts' for his defense either.

A Suffolk County jury on Saturday night found a black man guilty of manslaughter for shooting of an unarmed white teenager outside the mans house last year, ending a racially charged trial.
The jury began deliberating on Wednesday, and on Friday indicated that it was deadlocked and racked with discord. But late Saturday night, it delivered its verdict: The man, John H. White, 54, was guilty of the second-degree manslaughter charge that prosecutors had sought, and of criminal possession of a weapon. Mr. White was allowed to remain free until sentencing, when he will face a maximum term of 5 to 15 years in prison.
Mr. White was convicted of shooting Daniel Cicciaro, 17, point-blank in the face on Aug. 9, 2006. Daniel and several friends had left a party and showed up Mr. Whites house just after 11 p.m. to challenge his son Aaron, then 19, to a fight, and had used threats, profanities and racial epithets. Mr. White awoke and grabbed a loaded Beretta pistol he kept in the garage of his house in Miller Place, a predominantly white hamlet on Long Island.
<snip>
The lead prosecutor, James Chalifoux, said the trial did not hinge on race, but rather on the rash actions of a quick-tempered man who kept an arsenal in his house in preparation for such a situation. Mr. White admitted in court that he had not hunted in years and that the Beretta was unlicensed.

(3,194 posts)There are numerous benefits. If you were born black, tough luck I suppose.

(3,001 posts)That is one possible outcome, but not the only possible outcome.
I don't think this issue is that simple- I don't think we can boil it down to "black and white". I think looking at it like this is a red herring, reinforces and relies on stereotypes of race, and, in some interpretations, could be considered "racist" in and of itself.
There were many factors beyond skin color in play that night (and throughout the trial). Yes, skin color was a variable. But not the only variable. The situation was so complex that we can not simply recreate it in a laboratory, reverse the skin colors, hit play, and see what happens. Human behavior is not that easy to model and predict.

(36,748 posts)That's pretty much a no-brainer.
Definite double standards, especially down South.

(14,179 posts)There is no way an armed older bigger black man stalking a young white teenager walking all alone, and then confronting him and it ending with them both on the ground until the big black man gets his weapon out and shoots the young white teenager to death...no way the verdict would have turned out this way.

(22,165 posts)... would agree that there is a very high potential for that scenario

(61,771 posts)Except that I doubt that in your scenario the killer would have survived arrest. He would have been killed "resisting arrest" that night, and nobody would care.
