(24,853 posts)I transcribed it word for word, but the gist of the exchange went like this:
I have something to tell you.
You know you can tell me anything.
(long pause, like 20 minutes)
I'm gay.
Oh God, is that all? I thought you were going to tell me you dropped out of high school or something.
Some parents just fucking suck; there's nothing more that can be said other than they probably suck as humans in general.

(14,040 posts)I told my parents when I was 20 that I was lesbian. I'd already had a failed hetero marriage by then. So, I told my oldest sister first and when my dad got home, I sat both my parents down and said the following: "I'm gay and I don't mean jolly." My dad chuckled and said, "Hell, tell us something we didn't already know."
I've had some challenges with my mom and oldest sister since then--religion reared its ugly head and then stuck its head back in the ground--but we're all okay now.
So, I have to say that parents who handle their child's coming out with something less than tolerance and love are the one's with the problems, because the love of their child is conditional on the image they have in their minds of who their children are.

(24,096 posts)I have one although not on the same subject.
My daughter was getting married to an American and she wasn't thrilled about letting her father know (him and I have been apart for several years) because sometimes he can be kind of jerk about things and start lecturing instead of congratulating, that kind of thing.
So we were talking about how to make that phone call. I suggested that she should start off with:
Dad, I have something to tell you, are you sitting down?
I told her he would assume that she was pregnant and that the wedding part would be a relief. And it worked tickety boo.
