GM, Ford workers to see big profit-sharing checks

The United Auto Workers has told its members at General Motors (GM +1.56%) and Ford Motor (F +1.34%) to expect big profit-sharing checks early next year. According to The Wall Street Journal, Ford workers can expect $8,000 each. GM workers can expect as much as $7,000.

For the GM and Ford workers, the profit-sharing checks will represent 11% to 14% of the typical autoworker's annual wage of about $58,500. For entry-level workers, it's a much bigger percentage of their wages.
http://money.msn.com/now/post.aspx?post=8f073da6-076e-4b55-a9dc-fd404b394af4

From 2012..

$28.00 hourly for general assembly. Skill Trades and team leaders get a tad bit more hourly.
The cost of building a car works out to 4% covers the workers on the line Government 12% 24% to the suppliers , over head or as GM puts it profit sharing?
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_much_do_general_motors_employees_get_paid

And, of course.. the CEOs are making more.. but, these people have JOBS because Pres Obama bailed GM.

It's above the poverty lever wage.

"Starting pay will increase to about $16 an hour from $14 and rise to about $19 an hour from a previous maximum of $16, said the people who asked not to be identified disclosing details before they have been presented to union members for ratification. UAW President Bob King had said getting those workers a middle-class lifestyle was his highest priority."

Please, "a middle-class lifestyle" on $16 per hour?

While profits are at an all time high wages are going up to $16/hour.

GM Tonawanda is reborn, fueled by new engine lines and workers

As General Motors’ Town of Tonawanda engine plant ramps up its new engine lines, waves of new workers are coming aboard, more than doubling the size of the workforce from its low point a few years ago.

As part of building the engines, more than 940 new hires have been trained in the ways of GM Tonawanda, and for some, about life in a modern factory. Among the new workers are those who have worked at the plant or another GM facility, and others, like Angelica Gozdziak, who are industry newcomers.

“It’s definitely going to be a life-changing career for me,” said Gozdziak, a Cheektowaga resident, who has previously worked as hairdresser, bartender and waitress. “It’s very exciting. My background, I wouldn’t have a retirement plan or anything like that. I didn’t have health insurance. This is opening up a whole new world for me.”

Just a few years ago, the Tonawanda complex was worried about its future, not breaking in new hires. It had cut its workforce amid the recession and a drop-off in auto sales, while its corporate parent was struggling to survive. The manufacturing site’s long-term prospects seemed uncertain. Four years ago, amid bleak days for the U.S. auto industry, the plant’s employment was down to just 781 employees

Under national agreements between GM and the UAW, the wages for UAW employees transferring from other plants vary depending on their seniority, said Mary Ann Brown, a GM spokeswoman. Some of them come in at the existing rate of $28 per hour, while others come in at $19.28 per hour. Employees who are brand-new to GM come in at $15.78 per hour.

resources that they didnt need to "go bankrupt" in the USofA. They did it to drastically reduce the wages they pay. I said $12 for starting level from memory where it was actually $14.

I think the workers got a raw deal. Of course things could be worse, that's always a rationalization for cutting wages.

GM likely to spend $500M on employee payments
February 29, 2012 - 12:15 AM

div class="excerpt"]GM, which made a record profit in 2011, will pay bonuses of at least $182 million to white-collar workers such as engineers, car designers and managers on Wednesday, according to a formula obtained by The Associated Press. That's on top of $332.5 million in profit-sharing it already agreed to pay factory workers.

In the past, such payments have drawn criticism from those who believe the government shouldn't have bailed out GM and Chrysler. But GM, which made a record $7.6 billion last year, says the payments are needed to hold on to skilled employees. It's also keeping fixed costs down by giving bonuses instead of annual pay raises.

The bonuses will go to most of the company's 26,000 salaried employees, many of whom make more than $100,000 a year. The bonuses will range from 8 percent of base pay to 14 percent, according to the formula.

And that is better than the min poverty wage of approx $10 per hour.

"But with the 2009 bankruptcies of GM and Chrysler, the new-hire wage was set at about $14 with no path to full pay, no pension, and no raises or bonuses for six years. The auto industry was set on course to become a fully low-wage industry as older workers retired."

Last August, the Post reported, "The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations completed its report on UBS's role in helping wealthy investors shield money from federal taxes. Bank spokeswoman Rohini Pragasam said the donations were "categorically not
connected" to the Senate inquiry. The bank also is under scrutiny by the IRS and the Justice Department."

Just last week, though, the bank announced a settlement with the Internal Revenue Service. In a release, the bank said the settlement will affect about 4,450 accounts, adding, "UBS will send notices to affected US persons encouraging them to participate in the IRS's voluntary disclosure practice."

"This agreement helps resolve one of UBS's most pressing issues," UBS Chairman Kaspar Villiger said. "I am confident that the agreement will allow the bank to continue moving forward to rebuild its reputation through solid performance and client service."

That reminds me a funny thing that happened the evening after election day last November. A couple of Mormon guys came to the door around six and did their usual thing which is to look sad and hope you'll let them go into their pitch. Usually I say something polite before shutting the door but all I could do that day was laugh. I tried to laugh politely but I was just too damned relieved to think of anything appropriate to say. So I just gently closed the door, still laughing.

And they haven't been back.

From your link~

This is huge. Republicans, as we know, have spent years saying that raising taxes doesn’t increase revenues. It’s an argument that sits at the very core of supply-side theory. It’s been an absolute article of faith. They tried to say this when they passed the Bush tax cuts, and they’ve tried to say it since. But they were just lying. The Bush tax cuts cost the treasury $1.3 trillion by the low estimates and $1.8 trillion by the higher ones. They continued to make these claims long after the facts were in, but facts never stopped them, of course.

Thanks for that quote and Link.

I can't wait to see the report Friday!

This Friday morning will bring the new jobs numbers. If recent months and indicators are any sign, the news will be at least pretty good, and maybe really good—
