Some reader comments defended General Mills, or attacked the racist reaction the ad inspired. But most of the comments were hand-wringing statements about how the ad was "PC crap," revealed yet another sign of America's decline, or some other kind of negative reaction.

Whoever it was at General Mills that approved the ad blew it. The whole concept of advertising is based on appealing to the largest number of potential consumers. That one should not alienate potential customers is a gimme. Like it or not, most people view B/W marriages with some degree of distaste. Commercials with either an all White or all Black cast offend no one, but a rational person would have seen that this commercial was controversial and could cost them sales.

The poster in the OP who suggested that diversity and tolerance are destroying the United States doesn't know much about this country. We have always been very diverse compared to most other nations on Earth, and we built basic tolerance into our Constitution via the First Amendment.

Seriously, I was recently watching The Sign of the Four (Grenada Productions, starring Jeremy Brett, the best Holmes ever, imho), and I did some research on the Andamans because one of the central characters in the novel is from that culture. My conclusion is that they knew they'd get some blowback like this, but they went ahead with the ad anyway. Three cheers for General Mills and their ad agency!
