I live very near the areas that are being pummeled by tornadoes tonight.
I have spent more time in a bathtub with clothes on than I care to admit.
This afternoon I was in a farm store and this older lady and I were in the bathroom washing our hands. Invariably the weather came up...OKC was the topic.
She said "
Well...everybody said he was wrong but I am starting to think that Al Gore mighta been right"...
Ya think?

(12,618 posts)"No, everybody didn't think he was wrong. The overwhelming majority of the world's scientists, political leaders, about half the American population and a majority of the world's population that thought he was right. The only people who thought he was wrong are the same ones who believed Iraq had WMD, Romney was going to win in a landslide, Obama is from Kenya, and the Earth is 6,000 years old. Why would you ever listen to that bunch of clowns?"

Our area is going to be hit with this storm in the next couple of hours.
Going to be a long night.

(33,982 posts)Because specific weather events like tornadoes do not respond in direct proportion to climate.
Up till yesterday we were well below average for this year.
When you say things like that, you make it harder for us to make a scientific case for the impacts/actual effects of climate change and warming. Please don't.
It's the same correlation/causation error anti-warming conspiracy theorists engage in when they point to a snowstorm in June. It doesn't mean SHIT in the face of global climate change.
Edit: Another way to look at it.
Global warming didn't go DOWN in 2007/08.

(13,485 posts)saying she thinks Al Gore may be right after all? I'm not sure it helps in that case to argue about global warming and tornadoes. If she brings up Al Gore, then the answer was just fine.

(33,982 posts)In that context, I guess I wouldn't disagree with her.

(1,151 posts)The adult thing to do now, is , something. Wake up call. We have a problem. I live in Ohio. It has not rained in May. Been 4 weeks now. The ice cap is about gone.It should not take a catastrophe to make people notice and consider that we might want to, not shit where we eat.
But it always does.

(8,434 posts)The situation is growing far worse at a much faster rate.
However....
This outbreak is not what makes me think this. This outbreak was simply weather, very bad weather, that hit a highly populated area. Was it effected by climate change? Probably. It was a singular weather event that occurred in a normal place during the proper time of year.
Climate change however is very real. Trends over years and decades can not be ignored. Gore (or more appropriately, the team of scientists) are correct, our climate is changing and storms are becoming more intense.
The question burning on my mind is why basements are not a requirement in tornado country? WTF?
