In short, Obama is an evil tyrant who needs to be overthrown. "evil" "tyrant" "hates America" "would have been treated as a spy on the battlefield" "brainwashing children" "actively working to destroy the Constitution" "wants to eliminate private charity" "liar" "lies to your face" "bully" "grotesque" "hates God" "is bitter for being black"

(11,804 posts)still a right wing stooge with goofball instincts -but not quite so far out - I think the TV show has enabled him to craft a cocoon in which his crazyiness can really fester and deepen.
Most people need someone around to say "Hey that's kind of bullshit"- even right wing hacks.

(11,804 posts)Look we are liberals which means we believe people are shaped by their environments - if you move from an environment in which you accept criticism as a part of your life, and then move on to being lionized and adored by teapartiers and then create your own little world - well you tend to get crazier. It's not an uncommon phenomenon.

I try to keep in mind what my grandmother said about Hitler.
That they all thought he was a funny little man, and that no one thought he would be taken seriously until it was to late.
Not saying Beck has that kind of power but, that there are those in power who think like him. And while we may think they are but shit crazy doesn't keep them from being a danger!

(53,661 posts)That is a powerful narrative that is engrained into millions of children and the GOP has found a way to harness that belief.
The evidence is all around us, they say, from climate change to oil spills, sexuality they call unnatural, murders, drugs, this and that and on and on. You cannot remove this from the subconscious of most of them.
Talk radio and television preys upon these things continuously with psychological tools. They see things happening in the real world and call it fulfillment of prophecy.
It means just what Beck says it means, store goods, surround yourself with believers, reject all others as of satan, then arm yourself for the coming attacks, get as far away as you can from any kind of government.
Most of these folks don't have a strong grasp of scripture but are addicted to media. So it begins, 'accused of horrible things,' lies will be told about Christian leaders, and 'destroy us' is sending Christians to FEMA camps and next the slaughter of Christians.
Thus he inoculates the right wingers from any facts that go against the narrative. This is Conspiracy Theory at its most effective, since the storyline has existed for centuries and all he has to do is add to it.
Beck loves to focus on Nazis and the Holocaust to hide behind those victims and get that anxiety going here. 'Get out of your comfort zone' means to become a Christian Nationalist, secede from the USA, the only way to live while the forces of darkness (in more than one way) take over Earth.
Alex Jones and the NWO, same thing. It's all the same, all the way to the 'Zionist Bankster Cabal' stuff, that comes straight out of the old 'Protocols of the Elders of Zion' pushed by Third Reich, Stormfront, etc.
He's 'preaching to the choir.'

(53,661 posts)This was brought back to the fore in many people's minds by the Reagan Republicans and it's only gotten worse since then. Incredibly bad.
Christians of some persuasions read Tim LeHaye's 'Left Behind' series and it has enlivened and brought those notions into their everyday life. It sets up the 'US versus THEM' mentality.
Church is nothing like it used to be when I was growing up. It's back to something more akin to the days of burning witches and slaughtering those who didn't 'believe' the things decreed by one fanatic or another.
The Founding Fathers did not want that here and spoke firmly against repeating it, but the televangelism in the eighties and the revision of American history by various preachers reduced the message of charity, forgiveness, tolerance of others and peace to something I don't want stuck under my shoe.
They are afraid, and their focus is narrow, unable to percieve anything that would take them out of it, as 'sinful.' Which makes them act like robots who are ready for whoever flips the switch.
The results have been in slow motion with the revolution at the ballot box. Some believe if they make this country like the Old Testament, we will be spared judgement for our sins. American exceptionalism falls into that belief system, too.
I say we need to pay attention. Most of the rightwing swill we see being disgorged by those who resist any lawful order and threaten killing Democrats are listening to Beck, Jones, etc. everyday. These shows are replayed, it's much stronger than the church on Sunday crowd ever was.

(53,661 posts)The court records have shown the correlation, but nothing can be done to shut up Beck because of the First Amendment which he is abusing mightily everyday, paid by rightwing billionaires. And since I lost family members to this wingnuttery, I can't but take this seriously. YMMV, though.

(12,712 posts)The reaction you have is one side of it and the motivation of those who believe him is the other side.
It is interesting to watch the effect, (on any political views) of massive manipulation by personalities who are becoming moguls in this experiment: Limbaugh, Jones, Beck, etc.
Edward Bernays would simply love the debacle and, of course, the medium is the massage/message.
Why are the on? Why do they become popular? Why do people react either pro or con? That's what's more important here. Pull back and take a look into the manipulation and manufacture of consent and the nature of entertainment, (above and beyond facts or actuality) as a means to appeal to emotional proclivities and shape opinion.

(13,257 posts)I can remember a time when the hateful, divisive, and frankly traitorous rhetoric we regularly hear from the far right would have produced public shock and stinging rebuke from elected officials. Now it's so commonplace that it's not unusual to hear it from elected officials, while their colleagues and supporters defend them.
I really long for the days when there was still a shred of decency and honor left in America.

(3,220 posts)They haven't done one thing yet. Not one, despite their "tree of liberty needs watering" bull crap. I think it deserves to be laughed at at this point. Also, between Glenn Beck's crying fits and his outrageous broadcasts, he has as much credibility as Alex Jones.
Glenn Beck is a joke, and his audience are all a bunch of wannabes who are too afraid to do anything. I can say with confidence that not one of them has the will to act. They're a bunch of losers that can't even leave their own basements.

(13,257 posts)...this type of rhetoric used to be the rare exception, not the rule. Tolerating it has led to a breakdown in civil discourse and reason. Tea Baggers and other vile, ignorant cons who spew this dangerous garbage are being elected to Congress.
I left this country for several years and was stunned by how openly depraved and hysterical the right's rhetoric had become when I returned. It's gotten dramatically worse since then, and still, virtually no one calls them on it. Maybe people have become desensitized. I haven't.
Laugh if you will. I maintain it's dangerous.

(53,661 posts)Here's hoping the wingnuts with their libertarian leader won't start a bloodbath in Washington, D.C. on July 4th. They clearly intend to provoke something there or their home states for the 2014 elections.
With civilians crowding the place to celebrate the nation's Independence Day, they bring armed weapons to intimidate those there. If the police let them go on their way, they'll be empowered to do it more often.
If police don't let them do it, they'll squawk gun grabbers at home and get votes that way.
If violence ensues, the prophets of disaster who want a civil war to start will scream Police State, Martial Law, etc. and that won't just be the rightwingnuts, either.

(794 posts)Beck loves it when baby killing NRA members pay attention to him and repeat his conspiracy theory narrative of history. It looks like Beck has the allegiance of every pedophile, rapist and wife beater- just like the NRA membership list. Beck+ NRA= No responsible adults+ hatred for America(ns). The Gungeon's right wing members will always complain when people describe the truth about NRA members. Even when those NRA members and advocates are busy raping and murdering children!
Why do NRA Teabaggers hate America so much?
maybe the answer can be found in the reason that so many NRA members are pedophiles. Gotta have gunz to protect the rapists from thier victims, dontcha' know. The NRA's membership list reads like a "who's -who" list for pedophiles, rapists, wife beaters and conspiracy theory mongers. Beck and his NRA goons are in fact one of the lowest form of human vermin- dead babies are left behind wherever they go.

(733 posts)He just won an award from the Disruptive Foundation for his wonderful "business" plan. Here is the complete description of his innovative qualities:
Glenn Beck, one of Americas leading multi-media personalities, is the founder and owner of TheBlaze, a 24/7 news, information and opinion network that is available on television and online. TheBlaze.com attracts 10 million unique visitors per month. Becks quick wit, candid opinions and engaging personality have made The Glenn Beck Program the third highest rated radio program in America and his unique blend of modern-day storytelling and insightful views on current events allowed him to achieve the extraordinary feat of having #1 New York Times bestsellers in both fiction and non-fiction. Beck also stars in a live stage show and is the editor of GlennBeck.com. He previously hosted a phenomenally successful show on Fox News. While Beck entered the media world as a DJ at the tender age of 13, everything changed when he found a new vision of his career talk radio. In 2002, he launched The Glenn Beck Program on just 47 stations with the mission to make listeners feel goodness from my show and accept me for who I am, flaws and all. Nothing has been the same since. Today, just a few years later, he owns his own television network, his radio show can be heard across the country on over 400 stations, his books reach the top of bestseller lists and he travels across the country performing his live stage show to sold-out audiences. Across all of these mediums, Beck connects with his fans in a whole new way, inspiring and entertaining them with his humor, hard-hitting interviews and honest tales about his life
The event was hosted by NYU Tisch School of Business. The Disruptive Foundation is the brainchild of Harvard business professor Craig Christensen.
