Global Super-Rich Stashing Up To $32 Trillion Offshore, Masking True Scale Of Inequality: StudyThe Huffington Post | By Jillian Berman

The global super-rich are stashing trillions of dollars offshore with the help of some of the world's biggest banks, putting billions of dollars out of the taxmans reach and masking wealth inequality's true heights.
Wealthy people were hiding between $21 and $32 trillion in offshore jurisdictions around the world as of 2012, according to a 2012 study from the Tax Justice Network, an organization which aims to promote tax transparency. The study, highlighted by a recent Bloomberg News report, found that more than $12 trillion of that money was managed by 50 international banks, many of which received bailouts during the financial crisis, according to James Henry, the studys author.
Bloomberg article: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-04-29/billionaires-flee-havens-as-trillions-pursued-offshore.html
Theres a lot more missing wealth in the world than we had known about from previous estimates, Henry told The Huffington Post. The real scandal is not all these individual scandals but the fact that worlds policy makers who know about this stuff, have basically done nothing.
The issue of wealthy individuals hiding their money offshore has come into sharp focus in recent months as reports, including those of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, have noted the broad scope of the issue.
The study's findings also reveal that the true levels of global income inequality remain unknown, as current estimates do not incorporate the offshore stashes and hence underestimate its true levels. the study found.

(15,438 posts)I am so sick and tired of the stupid in this country who still have the right to vote - and who are undermining this country with that vote just to enrich the already obscenely rich. Ugh!

(4,462 posts)... I think it is precisely because they have so much money that he is afraid to offend them. Don't get me too wrong - I generally like Obama. But I am a die-hard believer in the CT that the power structure in this country has been hijacked by special corporate interests, and his record on cleaning that mess up has not been very encouraging.

(4,462 posts)... so I can't tell the difference between the ones that are established as fact and those that are still in the CT stage. I know there are filters on the internet, the reactor in Fukushima is boring through the Earth's mantle and will soon reach the core, and that Al Qaeda owns a controlling share of FOX News. I'm still investigating the possibility that a foreign based cabal of Moose and possibly Camels are conspiring to launch a wave of ping pong ball attacks in the US. I'll keep you posted.

(541 posts)OK, it would be a few thousand each with just that money. Still, it could end world poverty. Thanks for the math lesson.

(12,296 posts).... people will, as you said, spend it. Spending money on stuff creates demand. When there's demand, companies (theoretically) hire. And when they hire, neighboring service providers hire. And then there's tax revenue. So infrastructure can be built. Which creates more jobs. Which creates more income. Which creates more spending. And upward the cycle goes.
Get it?

(541 posts)but, again technically, they were talking about the annual income of the 100 wealthiest people in the world being enough to end global poverty 4 times over. Although I do get your point. Unfortunately, there are more people than jobs, and not everyone is able to work.

(9,841 posts)If that money were truly being invested in far-flung places, say Madagascar, then the billionaires might have something. But no, it's "domiciled" in Caribbean beach resorts like the Cayman Islands, or little islands off the UK which pretend to be independent. The money then cycles right back to where it was before - New York, London, etc. So for them to pretend that their money is really invested offshore isn't just tax evasion, it's legalized fraud.

(12,296 posts)I will always love the movie Sneakers, in which, at the end, having got hold of a decrypting device, the heroes do anonymous transfers from the RNC and other Right Wing bank accounts into UNCF, Greenpeace and a couple other "leftie"/community serving orgs.
Really all it would take ... some creative keystrokes.

(100 posts)Last night I had a dream. A bunch of veterans got together and decided to do something about the offshore banks and the tax evasion. With their military training expertise they organized into a practical attack unit. They got some boats and went directly to a caribbean island called Caiman. they arrived at midnight. First, they took down all means of communications. They went directly to the central bank and took all the money. They left the island and no one noticed what happened. Those ones that had their money in the bank could not say they were robbed. All the money was tax undeclared money.

It's all "paper money".
Far better to let the geeks wipe out or transfer their bank balances...that's what is their real fear and the actual threat to the wealth they stole.
The army will be needed to liberate the real estate and factories. And escort the Greedy to the borders, or the court system.
Don't invade Iran, invade all offshore tax heavens and get all the money back. This can solve all U S A economic problems.
