Joel Klein, NYC education deformer, also works for murdoch now.

Michelle Rhee, the duct tape queen of DC, recently joined murdoch in funding an education deform candidate for the LA school board (the bad guys lost that round), and her group, studentslast, gets funding from Murdoch.

Murdoch & bill gates are joined in a venture to take students' personal data & -- well, no one knows exactly what they're going to do with it, but odds are it will make money. Sell it to pedophiles, maybe.

Because while we were sleeping, Congress changed the laws dealing with the privacy of student data, the uses it can be put to, and the power of parents to forbid it. Gosh, I wonder why Congress did that?

In 2008 and 2011, amendments to FERPA gave third parties, including private companies, increased access to student data. It is significant that in 2008, the amendments to FERPA expanded the definitions of “school officials” who have access to student data to include “contractors, consultants, volunteers, and other parties to whom an educational agency or institution has outsourced institutional services or functions it would otherwise use employees to perform.” This change has the effect of increasing the market for student data.

For example, the amendments give companies like Google and Parchment access to education records and other private student information. Students are paying the cost to use Google’s “free” servers by providing access to their sensitive data and communications.

The 2011 amendments allow the release of student records for non-academic purposes and undermine parental consent provisions. The changes also promote the public use of student IDs that enable access to private educational records.

First there was a non-profit called "The Shared Learning Collaborative" (ooh, that sounds nice -- a non-profit, a collaborative, and shared learning!).

It was "an alliance of states, districts, educators, foundations, and content and tool providers" who were "passionate about using technology to improve education" and wanted to "accelerate the progress of U.S. public schools toward personalized learning by creating a set of shared technology services to help technology investments in states, districts and schools work better together."

But it was basically astroturf, Gates money & Gates people: Look under "Collaborators" (like in WW2, I think):

Then the Collaborators either "launched" or morphed into something called "inBloom," another warm fuzzy "non-profit" with a similar mission, but now they're providing the technology...

IOW, no longer will we have different school data systems in different districts in different states. Now nationwide it will be "One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them, One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them!"

this company plans to share this information “with private companies selling educational products and services. Entrepreneurs can't wait.” We learned from a press release that one of these for-profit companies that the state has signed up to use this data is called Escholar.

InBloom, a 3-month-old database, is funded primarily by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. A division of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. built the infrastructure for the new electronic portal.

Justin Hamilton, who recently stepped down as Arne Duncan’s press secretary, has accepted an executive position at Rupert Murdoch’s Amplify. This division, headed by Joel Klein, sells technology to the schools.

This is funny, because last May I had a Twitter debate with Justin about the role of entrepreneurs in education. I didn’t see much good coming from injecting the profit motive into schooling, and Justin disagreed. He landed in the right place for him.
