More crap in Joe Barton's district- "Magnablend acquires Superconducting Super Collider facility "

Magnablend, a privately held Texas corporation specializing in custom chemical manufacturing, blending, and packaging, has purchased the former Superconducting Super Collider property in Ellis County just outside of Waxahachie.

"The Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) site offers us an ideal location to preserve local jobs, make a previously vacant property viable and productive again, and provide Ellis County with additional tax revenue and economic development as we keep pace with the increasing demand from our customers and continue to grow our business," said Scott Pendrey, CEO of Magnablend.

Magnablend plant lost

Chemicals fueled the fire at Mangnablend, Inc. Monday morning as firefighters from seven departments worked to extinguish the flames.

As of press time Monday night, no injuries were reported in Monday's blaze, which took firefighters more than six hours to contain as multiple explosions were reported inside the plant as crews worked bring the fire under control..

Magnablend: Chemically Speaking

Even though the flames of Oct. 3 at Magnablend, Inc.’s West Highway 287 plant have long been extinguished, questions still linger within the community regarding what residents may have possibly been exposed to chemical-wise.

a few examples:

METHANOL – Clear, colorless liquid with slight alcohol odor. May cause skin, eye,
respiratory and ingestion irritant. Product: Plastics, plywood, paint, explosives.

SULFURIC ACID – Clear colorless liquid. May cause skin, eye, respiratory and ingestion irritant. Product: Lead-acid batteries for cars, oil refining and wastewater processing.

PROPYLENE CARBONATE – Liquid with faint odor. May cause skin, eye, respiratory and ingestion irritant. Product: Used as component in lithium batteries.

There will be houses/children/livestock within walking distance of this factory... again. Their application for exemption from zoning laws was approved.

They stared at me intently while I took pictures of the place. It was odd. Also, I have never talked to so many sheriffs in my life. They were really interested in anyone taking pictures.

That is an interesting blog post. I have seen a few others like that, too.

I took pictures of the site back in the mid-90's after it had been closed for a few years, but did not get inside. At that time, there was not the same level of interest by law enforcement. This time, though, I spoke to sheriffs three times over the span of about half of an hour. They were nice, but one could tell that they were under pressure to keep everyone away from the site itself.

Photographing from the county roads was no problem. That is where I was when I attracted the cattle. They would have been off the bottom of the first photo in the blog post that you linked to, I believe.

That place just makes me sad.

There is an interview on C-SPAN:

http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/302584-3

The SSC is mentioned at about time index 25 min 0 sec, but I am not sure that it is possible to get the player to skip ahead in that video. (I would think that that would be possible, but it does not seem to work for me at the moment.) Anyway, Professor Weinberg thinks that the US has succumbed to a small-government-and-no-taxes mania (paraphrased if not plagiarized) that is doing in US science. The SSC was the beginning of this process.

some of my professors (who initially came to Texas to work on the project) were pretty right wing. George Bush Sr. supported it.

This is still an open wound for particle physicists here.
