I was surprised," producer Gerald Molen, who won an Oscar for Schindlers List, told FOX411s Pop Tarts column. "2016 was never made with any particular award in mind nor [was it] looking for specific accolades from anyone. But as an industry practice it was submitted along with a number of other documentaries."
According to the Hollywood Reporter, DSouzas controversial film, which delved into the Presidents past and early influences that may have shaped his political ideology, made more money than all 15 short-listed films such as Searching for Sugar Man, Ethel and Bully.
2016 loses an opportunity to compete in what most always perceived to be a fair business atmosphere," Molen said. "But no way, it is totally unbalanced and unfair... The left rules - for now.
And while Molen was somewhat surprised, others in the media industry were not.
Hollywood is seldom just about money. Its about propaganda. And if you defy the party line, you stand no chance of winning. So when Dinesh DSouzas movie got passed over, I wasnt even vaguely surprised, noted Dan Gainor, VP of Business and Culture at the Media Research Institute. Is that bias? Of course. Jack Nicholson was close: Hollywood cant handle the truth. And they cant handle disagreement. Their one-sided view of what deserves awards underlines that.
Yet some media critics argue that Oscar nods have little to do with box office earnings.
The Academy has a particular set of criteria for documentary films, mostly based on how they perceive the quality of the story telling in the film, said Hollywood writer Jenn Hoffman. To accuse the Academy of being in some sort of liberal conspiracy seems childish.
The Academy did not respond to a request for comment.

(23,671 posts)So many of the greatest movies made never make it to the Academy Awards because they were too successful.
Most of the movies up for an Oscar make people scratch their head because the public has never heard of them before they were nominated, and then the critics work overtime convincing people that these nothing movies were better than the blockbusters the public spent nearly half a billion to see.

Life of Pi?
Seriously, would anyone care about that if it hadnt been nominated in place of several movies that were 10x more successful in ticket sales?
Why do so many people assume sales have no bearing on the ability of a movie to entertain, which is usually what movies are supposed to be about, isnt it?
How about the last Bond movie, where the bad guy was touted as being a worthy nomination for Supporting Actor when it came out, yet it was obvious that idea would go nowhere just because of the successful nature of the 007 franchise, thats one small example.

(24,347 posts)of the film being complete and utter bullshit pulled wholesale from Dinesh D'Souza's gaping anus, but why let the facts get in the way of a good persecution story?

(3,526 posts)...."a movie or a television or radio program that provides a factual record".
Therefore, if you don't make a movie consisting of facts, you can't be considered for an award for a documentary. Fiction, maybe, but certainly not a documentary.
Case closed.
