To me, the photo of each couple represents a different stage in the relationship between men and women and marriage in the US -- from the Roosevelts who still reflected the Victorian ideal of the chivalrous but dominant male to the Obamas who are equals, both strong, both caring, but equals.

And then you see how the women from the shy Eleanor Roosevelt, through the "Dare I really show how much fun I am having?" Jackie Kennedy to the women who matured in the 1960s and thereafter -- increasingly self-assured, increasingly able to hold their own.

We've come a long way. We really have.

I was born in the day of Eleanor Roosevelt and am so proud and happy to be a woman today.
