>>To the rumors about his sexuality, his standard answer was that it was no ones business but his own. Placards sprouted in the 1977 mayoral campaign saying, Vote for Cuomo, Not the Homo. Mr. Koch did not respond at the time, but 12 years later, in his book His Eminence and Hizzoner, he recalled, When I first saw those posters, I cringed, and I wondered how I would be able to bear it.
Although Mr. Cuomo always disclaimed responsibility for the posters, Mr. Koch never forgave him, as he made clear with a pointedly disparaging reference to Mr. Cuomo in a recorded interview with The Times that was not to be made public until Mr. Kochs death.
Asked on a WMCA radio show in 1989 about his sexuality, Mr. Koch said that he was heterosexual. I happen to believe that there is nothing wrong with homosexuality, he said. Its whatever God made you. It happens that Im heterosexual, but I dont care about that. I do care about protecting the rights of 10 percent of our population who are homosexual and who dont have the ability to protect their rights.>>>>
No other mention of it in the rest of the obit... that I can find, anyway.
Most peculiar: "...not to be made public until Mr. Koch's death."
Well....... ?

(11,464 posts)there is a video/audio/written transcript released by the NY Times which famous people
do, and is essentially a last word that was aired on NY radio yesterday.
There is a good 10 minutes on this.
It is fascinating.
Ed Koch finally got his revenge on Mario and Andrew.
And this takes Andrew out from ever thinking of higher elected office.
I myself never forgave either of the two for this.
Love or Hate Ed Koch politics (and I was on the side of Rev. Al Sharpton in stating Koch started a race war in the 1980s, (and living in Brooklyn at the time too),
I also saw in the this specific campaign(late 70s)(as I lived in Queens that year), the posters
that indeed said
Vote for Cuomo not the Homo all through areas of Queens.
It was disgusting and to think mario was running to the left of Ed.
Mario never appologized and Ed never forgave (though as he said, he did not show in public his disapproval of Mario as the two needed to work together for the city).
In dying, Ed Koch evened the score.
(and made public what some tried to say never happened.)

(14,498 posts)... and specifically tied *ANDREW* to it for the first time. ( Andrew, for non NYers, was dad's campaign manager and also professed ignorance.)
That's been in print before but never attributed to Koch directly.

(14,255 posts)and people from Cuomo's campaign were going around telling people to "vote for Cuomo, not the homo". Koch called Cuomo and said stop that, Cuomo said he had nothing to do with it or whatever, and the slogan continued.
Koch said he never bothered to go on record about his sexuality, people could believe what they want, but it was a crappy way to campaign.
At least that is what I got from the interview, which evidently was not to be shown until after Koch's death.

(11,464 posts)at the very least, Koch said they did nothing to stop it and professed ignorance.
(in things like this there is never a way to prove who actually put the plan into place, but
by not doing anything, it remained in place througout the remainder of the election.
and it would be typical of Mario not getting his hands dirty, but letting his son and others do the dirty work. imho
here is article about it-

Ed Koch, who was always private about his sex life, took a shot at former rival Mario Cuomo over Homo ads in an interview released after his death
Koch said he always held a grudge against Mario and Andrew Cuomo for 1977 campaign signs that branded him as being gay
During a nasty 1977 Democratic mayoral primary campaign between Koch and Mario Cuomo, political signs appeared in Queens that read: Vote for Cuomo, Not the Homo.
Following Kochs death in Manhattan early Friday, the New York Times released a 2007 interview during which Koch said he never truly forgave Cuomo, or his son Andrew, now New Yorks governor, for the dirty political trick.
