(22,143 posts)They did get Mittens through by dividing the crazy vote, they can do the same with Christie.
The difference is Christie is a hard core conservative on the fiscal side without the religious lunacy and open bigotry of the baggers. Whereas no one trusted Romney at all on the right, Christie is a true disciple of the Reagan economic model. He'll also get a lot of the independent voters that were afraid of the crazy social agenda.
He's a very dangerous opponent for anyone to face and I think he'd beat anyone except Hillary. Against her it'll be 50/50.

(11,464 posts)that if PA changed their electoral college way, the repubs would lose votes, not gain them
Hillary though would win many places in the south
but it shall be Jeb. Christie may be VP and they may win PA, but Hillary will win close to 400 to 450 votes in the electoral college
including Arkansas, KT, Tenn GA, SC and Texas.
Texas is going to go blue in the next Presidential with the help both of the demographic change and IMHO the women's vote. And you won't see it in the polls til election day.
Ann Richards was Gov. and there are now more democratic voters in the state than republicans. And they will easily vote for Hillary45.
Christie has an easier chance at being VP itself(not just nominee), if he switched parties, but he won't.
If I were Bill and Hillary, I would go to Seaside Heights when the new boardwalk is officially open and be part of that iconic picture that will be taken that day.
The one with President Obama, Bruce Springsteen, Christie at the rebuilt boardwalk.
Put as many democratic people on the boardwalk as possible, and each one will insure that the republicans would never nominate Christie.
Hillary45 would easily beat all candidates, but she is the only one who would beat Jeb Bush like the Clinton's did to 41.
Are the Republicans the only party that includes white males?
I must be in the wrong place.

(8,377 posts)the last time in a very long time that the winning ticket is two white men.
Given the Dem bench, there are African Americans (Patrick and Booker), women (Hillary and some others who aren't ready in 2016), and Hispanics. So the natural course of things would be some combination on the ticket. It is hard to look forward with the Dem party and see a ticket of two white men -- ever again.
And while the base of the GOP is scared old white men, they are scared shitless about the fact that they cannot win without better support from women and Hispanics. So whether they want to or not, they will have to include some tokens on their ticket for 2016 at least, and I wouldn't venture any guesses about that crazy outfit after that. If they lose again in 2016, they will be in full meltdown mode.
BlueStater
(7,596 posts)...they need candidates who actually APPEAL and RELATE to minorities. I don't think minorities would vote for clowns like Rubio or Jindal simply because they're not white. It's the substance of what a candidate says that really matters.
BlueStreak
(8,377 posts)The GOP is all about the 1%, and there aren't many minorities in that club.
So they will go the Clarence Thomas route, choosing really twisted candidates who physically resemble the demographics they need.

(60,536 posts)Abraham Lincoln only served one term in Congress before he was elected President. It would be just like the GOP to nominate a guy forced out of the military.
BlueStreak
(8,377 posts)After all, although they had a bunch of clowns on the stage, they did nominate the least clownish, Romney. He was a prick, an asshole, the poster boy for the 1%, but he wasn't a clown on the order of Bachmann, Cain, Gingrich or Perry.
So I don't buy the conventional wisdom that the fundie right will force the nomination of a crazy. Romney was a freaking Mormon, after all.
I think they will be very motivated to get behind somebody who can actually win. To me, that means either Jeb or Christie. And it is definitely not Huckabee.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)In 2016, if Clinton declines to run, I could easily envision a ticket of Joe Biden and Sherrod Brown. If Biden also declines, liberals might be hoping for Sheldon Whitehouse and Martin O'Malley. My fear is that Andrew Cuomo will defeat the progressive wing of the party and win the nomination, but even if that happens, he might pick someone like Brown as a running mate.
Certainly, we have blacks, Hispanics, and women on our bench. I'm just saying that a ticket of two white men is still quite possible.
For the reason you state, it may be that the Republicans are more likely to have diversity on the ticket, with Marco Rubio being a strong contender. (He wouldn't run with Jeb Bush but I don't agree with the many DUers who think Bush has it locked up.)
BlueStreak
(8,377 posts)I haven't seen that. That is absurd. He hasn't even given a strong indication he wants to run.
If he runs, he and Christie are clearly the early favorites, but lots of things can change. Obviously Ryan thinks he should be in the discussion as well as Rubio. But the way the GOP primary deck is stacked, Huckabee may have the best chances of winning the primaries because he has such an advantage with the fundie crazies.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)There graham4anything proclaims: "but it shall be Jeb."

(11,464 posts)the only people who wouldn't in their party want him are the extremeists.
and like it or not, the Bush's are seated.
Except when a Clinton is running against them.
there is NO other democratic candidate but Hillary who has been 100% vetted, and who can just chuckle and laugh, there they go again with their rightwing conspiracies.
Most democratic candidates could beat most of the republican challengers, but not all.
Hillary can beat all of them, quite easily, and would win some red states (I predict 5 or 6)
and just about all the blue states (except perhaps PA if Christie is on the ticket as VP.
NJ won't turn red. But PA might.
If the wrong candidate is picked it would be another McGovern/Dukakis/Mondale
And indeed it is time for a woman President.
Hillary would also carry with her, coattails
and of course, Hillary would have Bill and he is great person to person nationwide.
and of course, Hillary would have the backing completely of President Obama and Michelle Obama.
And in 2016, President Obama would be strong enough to win a 3rd term, but he can't run.
(too bad if you asked me. Wish he could have 4 terms like FDR, but he can't).
and I do hope VP Biden runs too, to take out the others. Flank her, then back her.
One two punch.
And yes, I would keep Joe Biden for a 3rd term as VP, or give him the SOS in 2017.
Continuation of President Obama's agenda, at all costs, IMHO
to continue the job of completing it.
BlueStreak
(8,377 posts)She has a better chance now than any earlier time. But to suggest she wins easily is nonsense. I don't know that we have anybody presently who would have a better chance, but I don't see any easy win for her.
It is vitally important because in all likelihood, there will be no SCOTUS vacancies among the conservative 5 during Obama's term, but 2-3 of the 5 could very well drop in the 2017-2020 term.
graham4anything
(11,464 posts)I have been predicting one of the bad 4 will retire in the next 3 years, especially if it appears Hillary is inevitable.
I think the rush to take cases this year of major importance shows that.
And I think Kennedy also can retire. But even one is enough
And I think two democratic changes will happen, Ginsburg as soon as she becomes the longest running justice (think its in 2 1/2 years), and Breyer.(though if Hillary were inevitable that could change their minds.
I do hope if they are retiring, they do so early enough so President Obama can get his nominations through.
Intersting article I read today suggest President Obama is not planning on being a lame duck the last two years, and is actively going to attempt to get a better congress in 2014, going for four full years.
Which is why a continuation of his policies will make his not being a lame duck easier.
BlueStreak
(8,377 posts)the SCOTUS extremists retiring early because they think a Hillary win is inevitable. Even if Hillary wins, it will not be decided early. It will be more like Romney than McCain. And when you factor in 4 more years of the GOP adding to its election tampering machinery, even a "runaway" victory could still go right down to the wire.
I like Hillary, but just remember she is still hated by many. She would be easy to demonize -- and that is what they do best.
If she is the nominee, I will support her 100%. But we shouldn't get cocky about it.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)It's tangential to the last-white-male question, but you suggest that Ginsburg will retire "as soon as she becomes the longest running justice (think its in 2 1/2 years)...."
William O. Douglas served for 36 years and 209 days (1939-75). Ginsburg was sworn in on August 10, 1993, so she would pass Douglas sometime early in 2030, a little before her 97th birthday.
Ginsburg has actually said that she "still wants to match Justice Louis Brandeis, who stepped down at age 82." ("Ginsburg says no plans to leave Supreme Court") She turns 82 in March of 2015. I predict that, at about that time, she'll announce her retirement, effective at the end of that term of the Court in or about June. That would ensure that Obama could fill the seat. If the vacancy doesn't occur until 2016, there's much more danger that the Republicans in the Senate will block any nomination, hoping that the seat can instead be filled by a Republican.

(144 posts)The job should be given to (for me) the Democrat whose vision best suits the country and Democratic principles. If that happens to be a white male than so be it. With Obama's ascendency we can put past the race issue. I would be perfectly happy with Joe abides as President, although I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Hollary. I want to see a Latino and a gay person in that position as well. I think I'm pushing it in terms of seeing a Muslim as we clearly don't have separation of church and state. But no I don't think W. will be the last white male President and he shouldn't be.
That's not very likely. I'd actually say it's more likely than not there will be a white male president next time around. Probably the whole Republican field will be white males and most of the Democratic field too.
I personally don't think that Hillary Clinton is guaranteed to become president just because she decides to run. And it's way too early to speculate about anything beyond that.

The religious barrier will be the toughest. Right now, a straight white male like me has less of a chance than most of the people in other demographic groups, because they espouse a belief in Christianity.
I was undecided whether and in what order to list the religious but not Christian. For example, a Jewish candidate would face some prejudice, but there are so few Jews that it would likely be a while before one was elected even in the absence of prejudice. For that reason, even though the prejudice against the nonreligious is stronger than anti-Semitism, we might have our first openly atheist or agnostic President before we have our first Jewish President.
