Between 2000 and 2010, police across the state reported 212 justifiable homicides to the FBI, 117 by civilians and 95 police. Many more are not reflected in the statistics because departments neglect to report them properly, an MLive investigation found,
Still, Detroit - home to 7.2 percent of the state's population - accounted for 81 percent of those reported.

It's a bright and sunny May morning in Detroit, but nearly two dozen women are packed into a harshly lit meeting room at a west side church. They are studying Michigan's "Stand Your Ground" law and learning how to apply for a concealed pistol permit.
The church is roughly three miles from the gas station where well-known Pastor Marvin Winans was mugged three weeks earlier. Many in the class say that inspired them to buy their first gun.

Another sad indictment of a once proud city.

(2,522 posts)"Worthy, whose office reviews all fatal shootings, believes Detroit police over-report justifiable homicides to the FBI to lower its criminal homicide rate, which still is among the highest in the nation." More people becoming armed in Detroit because law enforcement ranks are down about 40% from previous decade. Fewer on-street police means criminals can roam more freely and residents feel greater urgency to defend their property. State needs to assist City in putting more officers on the street.

(5,169 posts)A big part of the problem is the attitude in Detroit. Many people have no regard for their own lives, much less the lives of others. Not to mention their is a huge problem with getting citizen cooperation to help solve crimes.
Physical evidence can only go so far. Without witnesses, you have a solve rate under 50%.

I spent a few years living literally across the street from the mission hill projects in Boston, 99% of those people were what a even judgmental person would call normal, they never made the news.
The bad apples managed to have the housing torn down (all for a political sound byte), for no apparent reason.
Detroit is just a macro example of that i think.
well the corrupt little toad of a mayor had a hand in it, i can feel sorry for his health, but can hardly forgive him.

(5,169 posts)Poverty and attitude are the biggest killers in Detroit.
Lots of "Fuck this shit it ain't MY problem" and "Stop Snitchin" down in the city.
The city needs more people to quit saying "It's not MY problem" and start saying "I am important to the solution".
