Sen. Crapo guilty of DUI, gets booklet thrown at him

Posted by Joel Connelly on January 4, 2013 at 11:41 am

Republican Sen. Mike Crapo of Idaho pleaded guilty to driving under the influence on Friday in a Virginia courtroom, and had his drivers license suspended for a year and was fined $250. A 180-day sentence was suspended on condition of good behavior.

Crapo, a Mormon, was pulled over in Alexandria, Va., the wee hours of December 23rd for running a red light. The arresting office reported that his speech was slurred, his eyes bloodshot, and that the two-term senator smelled of alcohol. He reportedly confessed to consuming “several shots of vodka.”

Crapo said Friday that he had consumed vodka tonics, was “restless and could not sleep,” and decided to take a late night drive through Washington, D.C. and its Virginia suburbs. Despite his church’s strictures against drinking, Crapo said he had consumed alcohol for relief of stress.

“It was a poor choice to use alcohol to relieve stress and was at odds with my religious beliefs,” said the 61-year-old Crapo. “However, on the night of December 22, I made an even worse decision to go out for a drive and get out of my apartment to wind down.”

I know not that this is his first DUI, of course.
License suspeneded on first DUI around here is pretty unusual, normall it is giving money to the court,
and suspended jail time.
Getting caught driving without a license around here is a much bigger fine
and if the judge does not like you, jail time ( I watched that happen to a client once..judge slapped him into jail for driving with revoked license)

Sadly, the town police, county sheriff and state troopers do not share arrest info. for DUI!!!!!!!

so tis possible here to get one in Mobile, get one on the freeway out of Mobile, get one between the freeway and the county, and get one in town, yet each is treated as a separate incidence.

many "devout" Mormons are closet consumers of alcohol & prescription mood altering drugs. There is a great deal of pressure on these dudes from the likes of the Utah Eagle Forum's own Gayle Ruzicka & her ilk. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gayle_Ruzicka

3. If you're not a senator, a first-offense DUI will cost you at least $12,000.

The fines, the court fees, the attorney fees, DUI classes, SR22 auto insurance, alternative transportation as your license will be suspended, etc. etc. etc.

But Senator Shito is special.
