OMG!!!!!!
I was clapping, screaming.....
It was so surreal - the sign looked like it was being held by Wayne Lapierre and he kept talking....the hands looked like they could be his and he kept glancing down and talking, so I was mystified....

(16,887 posts)...they are unprotected in Gun-free zones, a man goes up & holds a big sign that states "NRA is Killing Our Kids"
I was confused at first because it almost looked like Wayne Lapierre was holding the sign and kept saying "this is what's wrong"....the sign was on for over a minute.....
Then as they took away the protester, he got in loudly how the NRA is at fault.....

(16,887 posts)I cant believe this!!!! That they even let her in to the conference!!! She got a sign in again, and shout out!!!!
The surreal part is that all while you hear Wayne Lapierre is talking about the need for more guns.....

(16,887 posts)....the program was ended due to budget cuts....
We live in Ross California and had until this last May a full-time assigned police officer who knew all the kids and campus and patroled....these type of achool resource officers are police and do community policing and keeping our kids safe.....I want this program back and think it would be great that all schools have this.....
HOWEVER - I DONT WANT THE NRA ANY WHERE NEAR THESE EFFORTS, TRAINING, FUNDING, Or DECISIONMAKING WHEN IT INVOLVES OUR KIDS!!!!

(8,421 posts)who is going to fund a full time officer in my small rural school with 250 kids? Our town has ONE full time police officer. ONE.
Where are the funds going to come from? Heck, I'm just trying to buy new textbooks, WI is hanging by a thread here. We will never be able to pay for an armed guard here.

(16,887 posts)I guarantee if all Ammo was taxed up the Wazzu - a dollar for every bullet, your rural town could have that School Resource Officer....
My childrens school had Officer Bob there for the 400+ kids...it was frankly the best money spent by our local police....they eliminated him last May due to budget cuts....that position is far more impoertant than the police officers and overpaid Chief who sits in his office.....

(7,261 posts)One police officer in a school is basically useless. An average school has several entrances, many hallways, sometimes more than one story, dozens and dozens of classrooms, offices, etc.
Most shooting rampages last only a short time, minutes. The odds that the security theater officer is within stopping distance of a crazed shooter at any given time are very small.

(16,887 posts)...knew the kids and people in community. He was a former Army Specials Ops guy. He watched all that goes on. If for example I walked by, he would wave and say hi. But if he saw any vehicle or person that didnt fit in, he was watching. That in itself was a deterrent. His sheer presence. So an SRO is a good thing - what we shouldnt have is a NRA police force out there of armed citizens....thats crazy....

(15,715 posts)The police officer lets in say a plumber to fix a toilet.
Plumber has gun in tool box or in the truck that he goes and gets
Or the UPS driver or telephone man or just about any service person..
It just can not work

(16,887 posts)Our school's Resource Officer was a paid officer in Law Enforcement employed by the Town's police force. In Uniform. In front of school in morning walking around at pick-up, watching all going on. When school begsn, doors on campus closed and locked except front administrative offices. Meanwhile the Officer patroled and was within earshot and a minute to being able to respond to anything going on. Its the school administrators that admit people in. Most schools have a policy that other than the achool custodian, all "workers" are only allowed on the school campus during non-school hours.

(7,261 posts)In Newtown, Lanza shot out the door to gain access. School was already in session, so the likelihood of a patrol officer being in the immediate vicinity would have been very slim.
Perhaps your school is quite small. The schools in our district have multiple halls, stairways, wings. To have any effectiveness whatsoever, there would need to be an armed guard at every outside door, whether the door is locked during the day or not. We would need a squad of half a dozen or more armed guards in some of our schools.
When we're ready to devote the majority of our meager school budgets to security then we'll be assured of thwarting most rampages. Anything less is wishful thinking.

(16,887 posts)We have a town of approximately 2400 people with about 400+ kids at our local K-8 school. Our local police force has 8 fulltime police officers (including the chief and two seargeants) with 2 officers on duty at all time. Up until last May, we had a fulltime SRO who was at the school at 8AM thru school day, either directly in front of school upon school starting or getting out and during school hours, patrolling the grounds and the town park in front where the Post office is. If he was at the back area of school or near the corner of the park sitting on the bench, if someone entered the front of the school and a shot rang out, he would be able to radio for backup immediately and head in the direction of shooter. His constant presence during school day was a deterrent to any child predator, drug dealer or someone who might want to go near the kids during recess with ill intentions. Now that we dont have a SRO, a prospective shooter could walk into the front entrance, even with protective front, and if any of the administrators couldnt alert the police soon enough or were killed upon the entry of the shooter, this shooter could kill many civilians before police arrived. If "Officer Bob" was still here at our school campus, even if it was at the back of campus, I guatantee you he would hear any gunshots, radio for backup and know what to do. Most of my childrens teachers and principal have never even heard a gunshot and could mistake it for a car backfiring. Not Officer Bob Besgrove....trained in Army, he would know immediately the sound of gunfire (not to mention recognize any strangers in area) and the simple presence of him would bring police there in minutes and save lives.
Our town almost got rid of the police recently because of funding issues - but we saved them with passing in November Measure D to fund our police....had they gone away, response times could have gone from 2 minute to 30 minute response times because of being further away in a neighboring town they discussed a merger with. Now that we saved our local police by funding it, I want us to bring back the School Resource Officer Program and have that again. My children would be safer, no question. And so, yes, I support a funded (perhaps by taxes on ammo?) SRO program nationally. Law enforcement, not armed teachers or civilians. And certainly with no affiliation, training or connection to the Gun Manufacturer Lobbyists called the NRA.
Old article in local paper from 2009 of our beloved School Resource Officer, "Officer Bob":

(7,261 posts)Whether taxpayers are being hit to pay for armed guards through school levies or municipal income taxes, is of little import.
The bottom line is the same: Lots of cost for little/no benefit. I base my opinion on personal experience as our school district does use armed police officers and has since Columbine.
On this topic we are going to have to agree to disagree.

(12,504 posts)Yup that's their call for some fucked up solution. Have the tax payer foot the bill for cops in schools so some blood thristy nut can carry their precious assult rifle into the school and only shoot 10 kids before they are gunned down infront of school kids. Great Fucking solution *not*.

(16,887 posts)Every bullet should be taxed....every asshole who wants to stock up should have to pay a huge tax surcharge for every bloody bullet.....

(12,154 posts)We need action on multiple fronts, but big-time taxation of ammo should be in the mix.
