NRA Silent Following School Shooting and Calls for Stricter Gun Laws
Groups and lawmakers in favor of stricter gun laws haven't wasted any time speaking out following the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., but the pro-gun National Rifle Association has been silent.
The NRA, which frequently communicates through social media, hasn't tweeted since before the shooting and its Facebook page has been taken down, a day after the group boasted of reaching 1.7 million "likes.".
On Thursday, a tweet went out from the NRA's official account saying: "@NRA "Did you hear? Our #facebook page reached 1.7 million "likes" today! Thanks for being a friend!"
The NRA couldn't be reached for comment regarding whether the deactivation of its facebook page was connected to Friday's mass shooting.

(30,831 posts)This is different. This hits us all where it really hurts.
The victims were sweet, innocent children and courageous school workers. Nearly every person in this nation can relate to the grief inherent in losing a small child.
This is the first time I have cried following a mass shooting. I have been saddened, choked up at times, but this time I couldn't stop the tears coming, and coming again at random times over the past couple of days.
It seems to be a nation-wide, shared grief, and it has made (nearly all of) us ready to finally pursue change.

(2,389 posts)Thousands of people were killed on 9/11. For many, it was a slow, horrible, terrifying death, with people jumping out windows in desperation.
Saying that 9/11 is somehow less of a tragedy is displaying a terrible lack of compassion for the thousands who perished, and their families.

(9,905 posts)These were the most innocent of the innocent among us. They hardly got to experience much of life at all. You can feel how you feel and i can feel how I can feel like I feel.
To hell with your snotty little lecture about how I lack compassion.
Go fucking argue with someone else I won't be bullied by the emotion police.

(59,612 posts)The TV Schedule for "Cam and Company" (which I surmise is like Fox & Friends, but with lots of guns) is up for Thursday.
Wayne LaPierre's "thoughts" ("More Guns, Less Crime In Virginia" are what comes up first at the non-Flash page.
All I know is that they must be scrambling to come up with some "marketing message", or else they're going to ignore the whole thing entirely.

(22,165 posts)They definitely want to keep their minions (the gun nuts) from posting asinine things (as they have on other sites, including DU) such as : never let a good tragedy go to waste, arm teachers ... we need more guns, more guns, more guns. This way the abject derangement cannot be traced directly back to them.
They are savvy enough to know that the mass slaughter of innocents was a tipping point for many ... I expect a release within the next day or two expressing condolences to those that have been impacted by the tragedy. They are a pack of rabid gun nuts, but they have understanding of public perception... they will be back to their gungasms

(23,272 posts)(Bloomberg) Magazines that fed bullets into the primary firearm used to kill 26 children and adults at a Connecticut school would have been banned under state legislation that the National Rifle Association and gunmakers successfully fought.
The shooter at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Adam Lanza, 20, used a Bushmaster AR-15 rifle with magazines containing 30 rounds as his main weapon, said Connecticut State Police Lieutenant Paul Vance at a news conference today.
A proposal in March 2011 would have made it a felony to possess magazines with more than 10 bullets and required owners to surrender them to law enforcement or remove them from the state. Opponents sent more than 30,000 e-mails and letters to state lawmakers as part of a campaign organized by the NRA and other gun advocates, said Robert Crook, head of the Hartford- based Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen, which opposed the legislation.
The legislators got swamped by NRA emails, said Betty Gallo, who lobbied on behalf of the legislation for Southport- based Connecticut Against Gun Violence. They were scared of the NRA and the political backlash. ...............(more)
