Media's attempt to MANIPULATE the election backfired
and it shows the TV is seen as a propaganda tool
and Voters distrust immensely
I think that is the Wake up call tonite

(36,649 posts)It's the responsibility of the news media to supply voters with all the information they need to make a proper choice. Some low-information voters can't handle it, but that's not the fault of the few reporters who try to do their job.

(52,161 posts)Newt, and only Newt, decided to be a total bastard to both his ex wives. Newt, and only Newt, decided to make a central issue of his campaign denying a class of people the right to marry on the grounds that the class of people were so immoral that their getting married would literally destroy civilization. His second ex wife finally decides to go on camera what should ABC have done?

(135,425 posts)I think it's clever manipulation by opposition agents.
I don't think Marianne is done yet. We'll see.
ABC did what anyone would have done, had they gotten the chance.

(37,648 posts)People don't pay much attention to ex-wives or ex-girlfriends, esp. when they're older. I think people suspect they're bitter, angry, etc. Also, a lot of people had already heard the story about Newt serving his wife divorce papers while she was in the hospital (not sure which wife that was), and other stories showing what an ammoral and immoral man he is. So this "new" story didn't break new ground.
Everyone in the know already knows he's immoral.
Now, if that story had been about Romney or Santorum, THAT would've been news.

(135,425 posts)No one believes a "last minute" accusation like that, hours before voting. The smart manipulator plants that sort of story right before one primary, knowing it may not move opinion more than a point or three, but hoping that there's a ripple effect in the next primary.
People who hear that sort of stuff, after they've already personally "invested" in their candidate, in terms of time, money, or simply trash talk, will still vote for their guy--just with less enthusiasm. The payoff is the primary that follows--eventually, if the accusations are juicy enough and can be fleshed out, people will start to turn away in disgust and the momentum will be halted.
