http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/09/opinion/sunday/dowd-a-lost-civilization.html?_r=0A great read; try to see the rest if you can.
The Mayans were right, as it turns out, when they predicted the world would end in 2012. It was just a select world: the G.O.P. universe of arrogant, uptight, entitled, bossy, retrogressive white guys.
Just another vanishing tribe that fought the cultural and demographic tides of history.
Someday, it will be the subject of a National Geographic special, or a Mel Gibson movie, where archaeologists piece together who the lost tribe was, where it came from, and what happened to it. The experts will sift through the ruins of the Reagan Presidential Library, Dick Cheneys shotgun casings, Orca poll monitoring hieroglyphics, remnants of triumphal rants by Dick Morris on Fox News, faded photos of Clint Eastwood and an empty chair, and scraps of ancient tape in which a tall, stiff man, his name long forgotten, gnashes his teeth about the 47 percent of moochers and the gifts they got.
Instead of smallpox, plagues, drought and Conquistadors, the Republican decline will be traced to a stubborn refusal to adapt to a world where poor people and sick people and black people and brown people and female people and gay people count.

(18,964 posts)That's pretty insightful for her!!!!!
From Dowd, anything more thoughtful than "Gore is effeminate" or "Kerry is an elitist" constitutes really high-end cerebral activity.
Bravo for the overpaid, overpraised hack.

(37,573 posts)to have her finger on the pulse of all the current cliches
From the snip, her article seems to be the usual tribal dreck, with Modo pretending to be part of OUR tribe.
Well, she is a white woman, and I guess the 27 million white women who voted for McCain ARE part of our tribe while the 19 million white men who voted for Obama are NOT.
At least, as the cliche turns.
Bang those drums, the tribe has spoken.

(5,402 posts)I looked up scientific materialism and figured out some of the broad parameters for it, but this image doesn't seem to make sense. Could you help me understand?

(7,404 posts)We thought we got rid of Hoovernomics a long time ago, but no, Romney attempted to drag that back but it didn't work for him like it did for Saint Reagan and Bush the lesser. But that could be because he mixed in a little too much Nixon to make it work. While I like the thoughts of Dowd experience tells me that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and about 12 years from now a new snake oil salesman will somehow be successful and take the country backwards.

(4,696 posts)Who would ever have thought blacks would get out and support the first black president? Who would ever have thought women would shy away from the party of transvaginal probes? Who would ever have thought gays would work against a party that treated them as immoral and subhuman? Who would have ever thought young people would desert a party that ignored science and hectored on social issues? Who would ever have thought Latinos would scorn a party that expected them to finish up their chores and self-deport?
