Fundies say believing in climate change is an insult to God

from HuffPost:

With movements such as young-earth creationism, we certainly have seen examples of religion being shanghaied into the service of anti-science. But some recent rhetoric in opposition to environmentalism and climate change science takes the cake.

For example, E. Calvin Beisner, leader of the Cornwall Alliance (a consortium of evangelical clergy) has declared that environmental movement is "deadly to the gospel of Jesus Christ," and that believing in climate change is "an insult to God." On November 30, 2012, in a televised discussion with his colleague Bryan Fischer, Beisner further argued that it is an affront to God to not utilize the "abundant, inexpensive and effective [fossil] fuel sources" that God has provided. He elaborated: "God buried those treasures there because he loves to see us find them and put them to use." Fischer compared those who would curtail the deployment of these resources to the "wicked and lazy servant" in Jesus' parable of the talents (Matt. 25:14-30).

Many of the groups opposed to the scientific consensus on climate change are also adamantly opposed to evolution, and the two movements (creationism and climate change denial) have, in several cases, joined forces to advance their respective causes in the political arena. For example, in 2010, legislators in Kentucky introduced a bill that would encourage teaching of "advantages and disadvantages" of evolution and global warming, among other topics. In February 2012, the Oklahoma House of Representatives passed a bill declaring that some scientific subjects, including biological evolution and global warming, can "cause controversy," so that teachers shall be permitted to help students "critique and review in an objective manner the scientific strengths and weaknesses" of such theories.

Climate change denial also found its way into the recent 2012 U.S. presidential campaign. Several candidates announced their skepticism of global warming, even skepticism of the fact of global warming, much less the likelihood of human contribution. Ron Paul of Texas labeled global warming "the greatest hoax I think that has been around for many, many years." Michele Bachmann of Minnesota dismissed fears of warming because carbon dioxide is a "natural byproduct of nature." Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania explained his views as follows: "It's really a beautifully concocted scheme ... It's just an excuse for more government control of your life, and I've never been for any scheme or even accepted the junk science behind the whole narrative." .....................(more)

Maybe they'll get Pat Robertson to send missionaries to the Niger Delta to preach to gospel of Supply Side Jesus to victims of environmental degradation (that isn't happening, I suppose) brought on by oil companies. In fact, maybe they'll fund the whole operation.

Climate change is for real and I don't care who or Who is insulted by my saying so.

They can sit there and believe that there is some omnipotent being out there who is going to save us all and then try to block the rest of us from trying to save ourselves. Or worse yet are those who think the world needs to decend into chaos -- that THAT is God's Plan (TM). They are the enemies of people trying to make this world a better place.

Didn't God used climate change to smote the infidels?

Wouldn't Climate change caused by man be an affront to God?

Didn't God command man to be good stewarts of all that inhabit the earth?

Because rising sea level associated with global warming are causing salt water to intrude into areas that had previously been used for rice production. Farmers have learned that it is much less labor intensive to allow their paddies to go back to salt and raise shrimp in them that it was to keep them fresh and grow rice. It takes lots of 'manpower' to grow rice, hardly any to grow shrimp. So global warming in in the process of accomplishing two things at once there. First the land owner's are making more money off the shrimp than they ever did off the rice; and second, the poor who used to work in the rice paddies are being thrown off the land. One crop or the other, the root cause is saltwater intrusion caused by rising sea level attributable to global warming. The evidence can be found in the seafood section of your local grocery store.

Isaiah chapter 24:

See, the Lord is going to lay waste the earth
and devastate it;
he will ruin its face
and scatter its inhabitants—
2 it will be the same
for priest as for people,
for the master as for his servant,
for the mistress as for her servant,
for seller as for buyer,
for borrower as for lender,
for debtor as for creditor.
3 The earth will be completely laid waste
and totally plundered.
The Lord has spoken this word.

4 The earth dries up and withers,
the world languishes and withers,
the heavens languish with the earth.
5 The earth is defiled by its people;
they have disobeyed the laws,
violated the statutes
and broken the everlasting covenant.
6 Therefore a curse consumes the earth;
its people must bear their guilt.
Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up,
and very few are left.
7 The new wine dries up and the vine withers;
all the merrymakers groan.
8 The joyful timbrels are stilled,
the noise of the revelers has stopped,
the joyful harp is silent.
9 No longer do they drink wine with a song;
the beer is bitter to its drinkers.
10 The ruined city lies desolate;
the entrance to every house is barred.
11 In the streets they cry out for wine;
all joy turns to gloom,
all joyful sounds are banished from the earth.
12 The city is left in ruins,
its gate is battered to pieces.
13 So will it be on the earth
and among the nations,
as when an olive tree is beaten,
or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest.

14 They raise their voices, they shout for joy;
from the west they acclaim the Lord’s majesty.
15 Therefore in the east give glory to the Lord;
exalt the name of the Lord, the God of Israel,
in the islands of the sea.
16 From the ends of the earth we hear singing:
“Glory to the Righteous One.”

But I said, “I waste away, I waste away!
Woe to me!
The treacherous betray!
With treachery the treacherous betray!”
17 Terror and pit and snare await you,
people of the earth.
18 Whoever flees at the sound of terror
will fall into a pit;
whoever climbs out of the pit
will be caught in a snare.

The floodgates of the heavens are opened,
the foundations of the earth shake.
19 The earth is broken up,
the earth is split asunder,
the earth is violently shaken.
20 The earth reels like a drunkard,
it sways like a hut in the wind;
so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion
that it falls—never to rise again.

21 In that day the Lord will punish
the powers in the heavens above
and the kings on the earth below.
22 They will be herded together
like prisoners bound in a dungeon;
they will be shut up in prison
and be punished[a] after many days.
23 The moon will be dismayed,
the sun ashamed;
for the Lord Almighty will reign
on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
and before its elders—with great glory.

And then there is Ezekial:

“Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture? Must you also trample the rest of your pasture with your feet? Is it not enough for you to drink clear water? Must you also muddy the rest with your feet?” Ezekiel 34:17-18

Woe to the shepherds of Israel who only take care of themselves! Should not the shepherds take care of the flock? You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you did not take care of the flock! You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally. Ezekiel 34:2-4. Good commentary on taking care of the poor as well.

Or Leviticus:

“The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine; with me you are but aliens and tenants. Throughout the land that you hold, you shall provide for the redemption of the land.” Leviticus 25:23-24

"And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you.” Leviticus 18:28

Or the beginning in Genesis. They get stuck on the word "dominion" (which means take care of you damn home, don't trash it, assholes - God) and ignore the rest (...of the Bible):

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” Genesis 2:15

God is a hippie treehugger:

“If you besiege a town for a long time, making war against it in order to take it, you must not destroy its trees by wielding an ax against them. Although you may take food from them, you must not cut them down. Are trees in the field human beings that they should come under siege from you?” Deuteronomy 20:19

You screwed up God's gift:

“I brought you into a plentiful land to eat its fruits and its good things. But when you entered you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination.” Jeremiah 2

New Testament Earth love

...and the worries of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word and it becomes unfruitful. Mark 4:19

The nations were angry and your wrath has come. The time has come for rewarding your servants the prophets and your saints and those who reverence your name, both small and great - and for destroying those who destroy the earth. Revelations 11:18
