This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by REP (a host of the General Discussion forum).
Less than nine months after Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in central Florida, another black teenage student was killed under suspicious circumstances.
Michael David Dunn, a 45-year-old vice president of Dunn & Dunn Data Systems in Vero Beach, was in Jacksonville this past weekend for his sons wedding. The Orlando Sentinel details what happened on Friday when Dunn, a gun collector, encountered Jordan Russell Davis, a student at nearby magnet school Samuel W. Wolfson High:
Jordan Russell Davis, 17, and several other teenagers were sitting in a sport utility vehicle in the parking lot when Dunn pulled up next to them in a car and asked them to turn down their music, [Jacksonville sheriff's Lt. Rob] Schoonover said.
Jordan and Dunn exchanged words, and Dunn pulled a gun and shot eight or nine times, striking Jordan twice, Schoonover said. Jordan was sitting in the back seat. No one else was hurt.Dunns attorney Monday said her client acted responsibly and in self-defense. She did not elaborate.
Schoonover also said that there were words exchanged between the two, and Dunn claims to have felt threatened before opening fire.
According to his father Ron Davis, the teenager died in the arms of his friend in the car. Ron said his son was unarmed.

This defense crap has caused open season on unarmed black people. Hopefully sanity prevails and that angry bigot spends the rest of his life looking at cement blocks and steel bars.

(10,745 posts)This was inexcusable. A 17-year-old kid SHOT, just for having loud music in the car? It's like Florida's gone back to the Thirties, or something.
R.I.P. Jordan Davis. You won't be forgotten.

(31,849 posts)A 17-year-old kid SHOT, was not shot just for having loud music in the car ... He was shot because he was a 17-year-old kid, sitting in the backseat of a car playing loud music and someone, in the car said something threatening to the white guy that felt it his duty to tell them to turn their music down!
I can only imagine how threatened this white man felt when told by one of these Black teens, "Kiss my ass!"
The REAL victim here is the white guy ... He had to endure listening to that horrid loud music because he could just drive off, grumbling to himself about how uncouth and inconsiderate those savages were ... Oh, wait ...
In Florida, words are now a threat warranting deadly force? I'ma keep my Black a$$ out of that state!

(463 posts)The little bit that we have in these couple of paragraphs don't give us enough to make any kind of judgement on. If the man just pulled up and shot a kid for loud music, he would have been in cuffs as soon as the cops arrived. We are only hearing a few facts. Sometimes a reporter with an ax to grind will present a few tidbits to get people all worked up. Then when the truth comes out, they don't want to appear foolish, so they continue to defend the position that the reporter tricked them into. If this guy acted rashly, he will undoubtedly be charged, and we will have a months long trial to watch. If there were other facts that we don't know about, it would be better for us to wait for them.
Just my two cents. Do what you gotta do.
Blue_Tires
(55,445 posts)But so far none of this is in dispute:
1. Dunn pulls up to convenience store next to four teens in a truck playing loud music
2. Dunn approaches them and "asks" them to turn it down
3. Verbal altercation
4. Dunn fires 8-9 rounds in the truck and speeds off
5. Dunn is tracked and surrenders to police the following morning
And for the record, no respectable crime reporter at a major outlet operates that way -- I'm saying that as a former reporter... None of this shit is made up; it's lifted directly from the charging documents...

(55,981 posts)we have "the facts"? When will we know when that is? Will there be a signal of some sort.
"If the man just pulled up and shot a kid for loud music, he would have been in cuffs as soon as the cops arrived." Ahhh if it were only so. If a black man pulled up and shot a white kid for loud music, he'd been lucky to have ended up in cuffs and not shot dead on the spot.
I think the new mentality is that if a white man shoots an unarmed black kid, then he was just standing his ground.

(251 posts)I approached a young man at a gas station a while back and asked him to turn down his music. I was pumping gas and it was bothering me, really. The loud loud low base some people insist on forcing on the rest of us hurts my ears badly. So I had to walk over to get his attention and then asked him to turn it down. I had never thought about the fact that maybe he would react badly to my asking, but this story makes me think I should be more careful in the future.
It is possible that this man just wanted the music turned down and the persons he asked didn't take kindly to being asked or told to do so. There are a lot of people in this world who don't care if what they do bothers other people, so maybe it wasn't Dun who decided to start something.
1StrongBlackMan
(31,849 posts)when he told you to Kiss his a$$?
Why do people, especially DUers, think that because something bothers them ... not threatens them ... not hurts them ... they have the right to impose their will on someone else? Especially, when it is just as easy to just suck it up and move along.
jackbenimble
(251 posts)In fact just the opposite. Apologized and turned it down. Seemed like a nice kid and I thanked him for being so. If he had reacted badly and threatened me or assaulted me I would have defended myself as best I could. Seeing as how I am not a gun dealer, or one who carries guns around with me I wouldn't have shot him, no. And BTW, it did hurt my ears and my head. Sounds can hurt. Not only that but I wasn't the one breaking the law.
Let's turn your question around and ask why some people think they have the right to impose their incredibly loud 'music' on everyone else when they could just suck it up and turn it down.
Blue_Tires
(55,445 posts)1. It's a public place...If the music was that window-shaking loud (and I seriously doubt it was, especially if he had a stock OEM sound system), then it's up to the manager of the gas station to take action...
2. The kid *might* have been inconsiderate to those around him, but Dunn still has zero fucking authority to do anything (it's clear he's used to giving orders to people)...He can make his request (and we still don't know yet if his request was polite and considerate), hope that it is honored, and move on...Of course if Dunn *really* wanted to be a dick he could have called the cops about noise pollution (and of course the cops would have given zero fucks about it)...
Now let me turn a question on to you: Why do some people think they have the right to introduce violence in the pettiest of arguments, and put bullets in anything or anyone who upsets them? Why do so many of the arguments ended by gunfire only involve ONE armed party?? What is it about carrying a gun that gives some people a carte blanche mentality to confront anybody about anything?

(55,445 posts)Dunn has stopped at the gas station for ONE thing, in and out under three minutes, at the most...Absent of other details, I'll give the benefit of doubt and assume Dunn asked in a polite, respectful manner...Once he heard a negative answer (regardless of whether it was polite or not), why the hell wouldn't he ignore the music, get his wine and get out?
jackbenimble
(251 posts)what transpired after he asked. Maybe he didn't ask politely and the interaction escalated from there. Maybe he did ask politely and the response scared the living hell out of him. We just don't know yet. Hopefully the gas station has cameras that can paint a clear picture of what happened.
Blue_Tires
(55,445 posts)anything short of "Without warning, the victim jumped out of his truck with fists flying..." or something similar won't hold water...And just for fun, can you possibly imagine ANY possible verbal response that would "...scare the living hell out of him"?? because I sure can't...
There were at least FOUR witnesses (the shooter's wife and the other three teens) who will be able to tell their own stories, so we'll see how it plays out...

That being said, I don't know how that attorney can claim that her asshole of a client acted "responsibly and in self-defense". HE instigated it and HE pulled his gun out first, and the kids weren't armed. WTF is this stupid goddamned "stand your ground" bullshit doing to that state? Of course, when you have a Florida judge dropping murder charges against someone who chased a mugger for blocks and then stabbed him in the back as he was still trying to flee, claiming that the "stand your ground" applied, WTF else can we expect? Hell, I'm white and I wouldn't even want to be in Florida or any other SYG state. I can only imagine how someone who isn't white must feel.

(10,201 posts)It's not news, it's entertainment. Toss in some key phrases like "Stand your ground" and boom you've got some good entertainment. If your looking for news, the last thing you want to do is go to a news website or channel. The daily show sadly is more honest than the "real" news. I'm not sure if John Stewart is the funniest smart-guy or smartest funny-guy, but I do know he is at least very, very honest.
If the race of the shooter and victim are both black or both white it does not make for good headlines; so you need to sensationalize it in other ways.
