I stopped at Dunkin" Donuts this morning and saw a guy dressed in camouflage colored pants and shirt and wearing a red MAGA hat. I guess he is all ready for Civil War 2.0.
The purpose of camouflage wear is to make one less visible. It's effective in jungles, but in a suburban setting it makes you stand out as though you were wearing a clown costume.
I wondered where he was going. No one goes to work dressed like that except for military personnel, and no soldier would wear a field uniform with a MAGA hat. Maybe he was going home to do, ... whatever it is MAGAs do at home. Then again, this is a fairly liberal neighborhood and he may have been on his own little "reconnaissance mission."
Whatever. Everyone at Dunkin' Donuts looked at him and then turned away. I'm sure that many shared my thought that he may have been armed, or had an assault rifle in his car. -- Do you suppose we'll ever get back to being a country that doesn't have far too many potentially dangerous assholes roaming among us?

(5,291 posts)I see you are not familiar with land surveying. We dressed like that all the time. Which was very interesting, as the job does require the ability to see each other in the woods and pastures. However, that clothing is the sometimes the only thing that can handle the terrain. and foliage. Most other clothes, including 'tough work attire', will just end up in shreds depending on where you are working.
Potentially dangerous assholes have always been roaming among us. They just did not have support. Now, they do. They have someone 'in authority' giving them praise and making them decide that their twisted viewpoint is somehow sane. The press are the ones fueling this crap. Most of the lunatic right would never be seen without them. Most of the press are owned by those who want this instability in our country. It makes for more clicks.

We should be grateful for those Red Hats.
They are like Police caution tape around a crime scene or other dangers to stay back from.

(17,757 posts)However, I agree that most people who wear the gear are making a statement. It goes something like this; " Hey, look at me, I am a citizen soldier and a patriot, I am bad to the bone and not to be messed with." The camo has exactly the opposite effect of the purpose intended, it is a signboard of who someone is. It is not only camo that sends that kind of message, I think that folks who wear "cowboy" gear are cut from the same cloth. This is from someone who wanted to be a cowboy, then I had my 8th birthday.

Those were the terms I heard for cowboy poseurs when visiting my sister in Houston. In the boonies there where my Mum lives, the real ones often dress the stereotypical way when they're working, for good reaason (boots protect from snakes; long sleeves protect from sun and muck from handling animals/baling hay; hat keeps head cool but protected from sun).
Since they dress pretty much the same, then the way to tell the real cowboys from the fake ones is the pickup truck. If it's banged up and scratched and has mud and manure halfway up it, then that's a real cowboy. if it's so squeaky clean that it looks brand new, then that's a Rexall Ranger--and invariably one in possession of an extremely small penis.
You can usually tell by the tan lines, or lack thereof, too. And the uncalloused hands.

(1,670 posts)folks used to wear camouflage pants. I had a pair as well. It had nothing to do with insurrections or illegal wars.
But maybe it was a means to desensitise us all for what was to come... Hmmm...

(13,800 posts)camo. I followed him around trying to get pics with my flip phone but screwed up saving them somehow. Those would have been perfect.
I can't imagine why a guy like that would spend that kind of money or that they even make that shit in his size. It appeared to be Realtree camo.
Then around the same time I watch these jackasses down the street load up to go hunting. I'm in Idaho and its afternoon and they are all piling into a car, so I know they are just going out near here after white tailed deer.
Those dumbasses are all decked out in hundreds of dollars of camo and hunting gear. We used to go out after school like that in shorts and tennis shoes. Whatever we wore to school. You don't need camo anything for that kind of hunting! That's why you can still take deer wearing blaze orange for safety. Dumbfucks!

(28,349 posts)...I used to get such a kick, during hunting season, out of all the camo-clad hunters I'd see at sporting goods stores, BBQ joints, etc. I knew that 99% of these sportsmen were hunting deer the same way I was: huddled in a wooden blind, either on the ground or in the air, waiting for the game to walk by. The point being: There was absolutely no need for camouflage clothing. With the kind of concealment those blinds afforded them, those hunters could have been wearing super-bright clown outfits, and the deer wouldn't have known the difference. In all of my deer-hunting years, I never bought nor wore a single item of camo clothing. And these days, I avoid the camouflage types, every chance I get.

(33,225 posts)I'm in Pennsylvania - we see some of this and it's not just during deer season. The real deer hunters don't have to advertise their hobby, and not many in our area would even want to wear a MAGA hat anyway.
I have nothing against deer hunters. We've got way too many deer around here even within the city limits of Pittsburgh. Those "rats on hooves" treat my flower garden like it's their free salad bar every night. The hunters are only allowed to shoot them in the State Gamelands, which are designated areas for archery and rifle hunting.

(12,735 posts)If you don't move, or move very slowly, and aren't smelly to them, they typically won't notice you. Camo is only useful to break up straight lines with color, making it more difficult to use human or visual sensor specific pattern recognition program to identify a stationary person or object from the background.
Hunters don't need camo unless they want to be less visual to other hunters.

Winter camouflage is "white."
I assume the Navy and Air Force don't use blue camouflage because it woldn't really be useful - the ocean and the sky don't reallu have lines to break up.
I'd wear camouflage - if it's blue or pink, but not a head to toe or even shoulder to toe outfit. (I actially own a pair of blue camouflage jeans and a couple of pair of pink camouflage knee socks.) Needless to say, I wouldn't be tryig to hide.

ACTIVE SHOOTERS! This is America in the 21st century. My state is a concealed carry, open carry, virtually no restrictions state. The polls are not off limits. So, check your hat at the door but go ahead, show off you piece. That won't influence anyone. WTF?

(8,994 posts)That taught classes in Wildlife Science and Forest Ecology, most of our students wore camo of some shade all the time. Especially during hunting season.
When I had to take role before lectures, I had to do it verbally and loud with visual contact at the response, because I could not see them in the classroom seats. That stuff really hides them😉.
Between classes everybody just bumped into each other scurrying to the next lecture class. Nobody saw anybody.

(146,393 posts)Of course, the camo-wearing guys have figured out that people leave them alone if they're in costume. Since the cosplay soldiers are generally antisocial, by nature, they're happy that you don't interact with them. They don't have much to say, really, anyhow.
They're playing a game. Camo is the official costume of the Cosplay Warriors.
