(175,734 posts)I'd like to be out doing some Christmas shopping today to get in the spirit of the season, then having a nice lunch as a reward. Unfortunately, because of poor health, I have to content myself with shopping online.

(11,138 posts)And still enjoy the holiday season thoroughly. In fact that is precisely what I intend to do. You should try it, it's MUCH more fun than getting angry and ranting at those who would attempt to manipulate you.
Merry Christmas gopiscrap.

(12,132 posts)I like the food and the music and the gettin' stuff. And I like gettin stuff for others. And I like that my daughter usually wants video games because I can play with her stuff.
And I like the week vacation I take between Christmas and New Years. More time to play with the video games and whatever I got.

(10,103 posts)I like the chocolate and the conversations with my family and extended family and friends, I enjoy stitching stuff for kids, including the little dress I'm working on at the moment for my favourite little girl and the stocking stuffers like bookmarks for her parents, and the beaded ornaments that are a tradition around here. I like the visiting and the lights and the baking........and this is just a celebration of the solstice.
I like watching the children and sharing the pictures and just generally being happy for a bit. It's a good thing, frankly. We need it in the turning of the year.
I'm even going to have a tree this year!

(10,103 posts)You think I go into the shops with my cane and my mobilty impaired mother on black friday??? No.
We went out for lunch, and I am currently stitching the aforementioned bookmarks.
Malls are anathema for us during the Christmas season; Agnes is too fragile for that.

(950 posts)so just do what makes you comfortable and IGNORE the rest. You can keep it as low-key as you wish. I do very little C-mas "stuff", but many folks do - no problem as long as I choose to bow out - gracefully or not.
Out of respect for others, I wish the title of this thread were not so offensive. It is a topic well worth discussing - I have a feeling there are many closet Grinches lurking out there, who find all of the holiday hoo- ha very off-putting.

(29,047 posts)I treat it like a birthday for all the kids I happen to be with that year.
I did not celebrate Christmas for a few years because I wasn't around any kids. For me, Christmas without kids is pointless.

(4,325 posts)ignore christmas and don't worry about it. I've been doing that for quite a few years and it doesn't bother me if the rest of the world wants to celebrate it. No one is forcing me to celebrate it. (unless, I guess, I lived in Kenfucky@
I don't care if they have the Nativity Scene, Christmas wreaths, whatever. Let them enjoy it. Same thing with the TEN COMMANDMENTS, the bible, the whatever book they use in their religion. However, I also don't believe I should be going out and trying to convert anyone to MY way of thinking. They leave me alone and I leave them alone.

(333 posts)the spirit of Christmas is important in that it is better to give than to receive.

(265 posts)Yeah, I'm with you. Christmas stopped being fun once I was old enough to be expected to buy other people gifts. If you want to know how dead, buried & forgotten the true spirit of Christmas is, just try showing up at a family get-together on Xmas without any gifts for anyone. The reaction may vary a little from family to family, but in your typical 21st century American household, you'll instantly achieve Scrooge status & won't get many kisses under the mistletoe.

(22,165 posts)The nice thing about this is you get to choose what you do and do not celebrate .. and how you celebrate the things you choose to celebrate.
I choose not to celebrate New Years and that's a big "goody for me"

(15,801 posts)Always have, always will. In spite of what some people do to it, Christmas would be just fine without commercialization. Business needs the holiday, not the other way around. And, unlike business, Christmas has occasionally been known to bring out the best in people.

(41,960 posts)I like it, and would venture that life would be better if the OP and those who support this pov would filter out what you don't like and find some things to enjoy. It's your life; you can control your part of it, no matter what those who are trying to sell you something are doing.
