I live in the reddest Congressional district in the red state of Texas. Would you believe my wonderful congressman is Ronny Jackson, Trumps old doctor. I am 74 and always had a goal of seeing Texas turn Blue. A week ago I was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. My brother died 6 years ago from the terrible disease. The average life span after diagnosis is two to three years. I am really going to be pissed if Texas is still red when it is my time to go. I would appreciate some good thoughts, prayers if you are religious, and some good juju that I beat the average life span for an IPF patient. It was caught early and I really dont have any outward symptoms so dammit I am going to last until we do turn Blue. Starting medicine next week that is really hard on you but does slow it down. Go Biden!

when I was being tested for various lung issues after a gas station worker grabbed a burst hose that sprayed me like a shower.
The first year of lung problems had me planning how I wanted to bow out. I was surprisingly calm and plotted a cross country trip to visit out of state family and friends, as well as revisit my past homes and communities to introduce my husband and daughter. I found joy and peace in those plans.
Will be here for you, sorrybush, rooting for you and your goals. Count on it.

(4,931 posts)I can add your to our synagogue's prayer list. We are very ecumenical! If you want to tell me your first name and your mom's first name. The Jewish prayer uses the person's mom's name.
May the One who blessed our ancestors,
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah,
Bless and heal _________________.
May the Holy Blessed One be filled with compassion for their health to be restored and their strength to be revived.
May God heal him/her soon, body and soul, together with others who suffer illness.
And let us say: Amen
I hope that you respond well to your treatment and certainly hope to see Texas turn blue.

(488 posts)I am a very ecumenical Christian and a respecter of all faiths and also respect my agnostic and atheist friends I am a retired teacher that had the distinct privilege of teaching kids from many countries and many religions. I even taught one girl who was Wiccian. We had great conservations before and after school. I loved and respected all of them and their faiths.

(7,671 posts)I think the first step in ridding ourselves of these nasty folks here in Texas is defeating Ted Cruz and I think it could happen. That might be all it takes to begin the transition. I'm 73 and had 2 kinds of cancer and my hope is similar to yours but meanwhile I am trying not to stress too much because that is not good for your health.

(488 posts)I am an optimistic person and plan on living life to its fullest as long as I am going. I am not even very concerned about my health. I will take it one day at time and enjoy every minute of my good days and my harder. Days. Life is what a person make of it.

(54,447 posts)I don't have IPF in my family, but both my parents and all of their siblings died of cancer except for one who died of a stroke while being treated for cancer. It's rare for a member of my family to make it to 80, and I'll be 72 this year. I figure it's not "if" but "when," and I'm hoping for a Democratic Senator and Governor again before my next round of "Beat the Reaper."
NOT having Ronny Jackson represent you in Congress seems like an obtainable goal. I hope you get there! Hell, I hope you get an unexpected remission for dessert!

(10,103 posts)I too have hopes that Texas could turn blue. My House rep is Roger Williams, not as crazy as Jackson but a useless POS anyway. If Democrats could ever get a national law barring political gerrymandering that wouldnt be overturned by the MAGA SC, we might have a chance in Texas.

(246 posts)Your fighting spirit is a true inspiration. Don't take the MD's word on years to live as gospel! EVERYONE has a different body/physiology, good health/bad health histories and factors and a different degree of that good ol' fighting spirit. I'm seeing you in the fight for a good while longer.

(5,173 posts)Quick story. When I worked at The Lost Colony, one year a terrible hurricane hit Galveston and really did a number on the outdoor theatre that presented the play 'Lone Star' every summer. We sent lots of aid and help to get the theatre up and running as soon as possible so that the company did not have to close for the year and lose out on whatever the summer would bring in. We were not the only ones, but I know we were one of the biggest contributors to the cause. We connected with Galveston that year. Since then, I always feel a connection to Texas (I also have friends there, but this started the connection.) Please hang in there and fight for both you and Texas!

(18 posts)Hello,
My father was diagnosed with IPF 8 years ago.His health insurance was a big help for him to get the meds that helped him for a long time (retired railroader).
It helped him to carry on with his life better than he thought it would! He got to do many of the things he loved doing throughout his life, which I feel helped him to deal with the disease.
I am sending you all the positive vibes I can!
Sincerely,
LLC
