People like Trump persecuted Black and brown people in New York. Its what they did for fun, its what they did for pleasure, Reid says. To me, this is justice.

(1,041 posts)It strikes me that the "fear of racial retaliation" is really a fear of racial equality. Their fear is that to be treated equally is to be treated as the privileged treated everyone unprivileged in the past.

(2,476 posts)Joy will always hold a special place in my heart because she reminds me so much of the counselor who helped me in the aftermath of my sexual assault. Just like Joy, she had no use for T****.
So glad you got help and glad that you found DU.

(2,476 posts)Thank you so much!! I am happy to have found this forum.
My sexual assault occurred in October 2015, and the last time I saw the man who hurt me was in October 2016 - the same weekend the infamous Access Hollywood tape dropped. So you all can see why I have an especially visceral reaction to the former occupant of the White House.

(2,541 posts)I think she is letting her emotion get in the way of facts and it is certainly understandable. I remember that time at the end of the 80s.
I dont think DT did that for fun. The pos saw an opportunity to get tons of free publicity (short the ad costs) to be something he isnt (tough guy, law & order like.) it would not have mattered who those 5 were and ever since he has been just obstinately denying reality because its not the one he likes.
Dont get me wrong. I believe DT is a racist to the core I just dont think that is what went on here. A nefarious and conniving a@@hole used others to elevated himself it is DJTs SOP.

(8,064 posts)as far as not letting them rent any of the trump properties at one point. Trumps were sued, but they didn't care. Trump went after those Central Park 5 BECAUSE they were Black.

You are focusing on whether his primary motivation was doing it for fun.
If I hear her correctly, she is patiently explaining to people like me who did NOT experience being black in NYC in that era how it felt to see the crew of rich white men stomping on poor black youths.
These particular elephants stomped without any apparent compunctions or regret at the young, poor lives they were ruining. Joy and her community were experiencing pain because they could see that the rich white men being lionized (Giuliani as well) did not see regard their young black victims as even human.
Technically, the multitude of justifications or motivations behind the infamous newspaper ad are also not facts plausible rationales, yes, but only detailed guesses about what went on in the mind of a white man who never tells the truth anyway.
In a way, Joy is describing an actual fact from her own experience: Trump/Giulianos behavior, and the publics admiration for guys like them, were importantly and accurately perceived as intentionally dehumanizing and intensely painful by a generation of young black New Yorkers.
If a woman you love was raped by a stranger and she tries to explain that what made it most painful was how the rapist enjoyed her screams, fear, and suffering imagine concluding that shes letting emotion get in the way of facts. Actually it is factual that many rapists ARE sadistic, and the victim is accurately recognizing a particularly devastating aspect of the perpetrator which is being overlooked by those who focus on he had other reasons.
I dont mean to be overly critical of your reply. I get it. I appreciate it, because it got me to thinking about how hard/impossible it is to walk in another persons shoes, and about the many times Ive hear emotion in the way of facts.
(Wouldnt it be nice if we could popularize the phrase letting greed get in the way of character
)

(2,541 posts)In the way?
History would definitely agree if it could and unfortunately due to the way we are built. Almost all of our output is emotionally based. Thats the reason we generally get most things wrong initially and then once we phuck up, we sit down and think about it in that process emotions can be removed but even then it takes a conscious effort because it is almost invisible.
I have heard the phrase dont make a decision when you are mad orders of magnitude more than letting emotions get in the way of facts.
As I said before I have no doubt about DT and his racism but in some sense racism is also about opportunity to either feel superior or get more of something or to just to be stoke an ego.
